@SM1 They didn’t lie. It’s a common tactic. Essentially, if you put away 20% of what you make in theory by the time you retire you should be able to live a similar lifestyle you live now with the amount you’ve saved up and what compounded interest provides. Keep in mind you also need to assume how old you are when you retire and how long you intend to live for. So in essence 20% is a good model to follow. The only thing I would suggest is to plan for the life you want to have when you retire. If 20% wont get you there or is too much, change it up. Or marry rich. That helps too.
Lol. I am poor it looks like

This is the most depressing thing I’ve read all day
Well this is depressing
35 / Now my anxiety is up and I feel inadequate. Did none of you suffer during recession?! Ugh.
Be patient and by maxing out your 401k, it means have them take as much from your check as the company will match. Its free money. I'm 55, in Chicago, $1.1 million in 401K by starting when I was 23 at Grey in NYC. No inheritance, no properties, just had each agency save it for me.
Not enough. And too old
Check out statusmoney.com. It anonymously compiles people’s savings etc and shows how you stack up against others in your area and salary range etc.
35 - $200k 401k, $5k cash... Students loans are done next year (finally!) Bought a house for 700k (outside Boston) and had 2 kids within the last 3 years. Really drained my cash flow.
That’s unbelievably impressive. Can I ask your salary?

30 in NYC. $135k total. $30k in 401K and the rest in stock/mutual funds/robo advisers. Wasn't employed and traveled for about 1.5-2 years sprinkled between graduation and now but those times were 100% worth it.
