How much time off do you typically take in a year?

Do you fly out to family for the holidays or do they come to you? We're hosting Christmas for the first time and having the entire family come to town for it. What are some can't miss holiday events in the city? Ideally accessible because my father is in a wheelchair.

What's the longest vacation you've taken and where did you go? Thinking about capitalizing on my unlimited PTO and want some ideas.

Any advice for presenting somebody else’s work? I’ve been stretched thin on different projects but have to present in place of some of on vacation with little time to prepare.

What are some easy to make, low stress holiday meals for a school holiday staff party? I was "volunteered" by our principal to set it up this year (🙄). I'm making decorated sugar cookies but kind of drawing a blank when it comes to savory dishes. Bonus points if you have any adult holiday themed games or fun drinks to suggest! It's off school property and there will be a bar (thank god), for context.

Question for folks with second homes: Considering buying a vacation home but would be primarily for family use. We currently have a primary residence with a mortgage balance of ~640K, so my understanding is I could only deduct the mortgage interest on 110K of the second mortgage to stay under the 750K cap. If I were to buy the second home through an LLC, would that allow me to exceed that 750K since the expenses of the second home would be pass through expenses/income?

So, how many days left before you start the holiday seasons? What are your biggest priorities for the new year?

How am I working out a part time employees holiday entitlement? The employee works 16 hours a week over 2 days.

Anyone ever negotiated parental leave before? I have an offer on the table. Gave me what I asked for $ wise and PTO. But mat leave is not great. Not trying to have a baby now, but in the next 5 yrs.

If you do billable work on a given PTO/vacation day, do you still count that day as vacation? Or do you get that vacation day "back"? Or do you only get the part that you billed "back"? (Or some other option.)

Can someone explain how PTO works in house? I have only ever worked at a firm, starting my first in house position end of this month. I’m used to just blocking off time on my calendar if I have an appointment (like the rare occasion I have a dental appointment, well child checkup, etc) and then going. Do I really need to take PTO for these things? I’ll be working remotely 3-4 days a week for reference and I’m talking about days when I’m remote.

The corporate urge to not even set an out of office email because I know I will be checking emails all holiday anyways

What are your companies doing for covid now? Are you expected to just use sick time or is there separate paid time that can be used for vaccines, testing and time needed if you are sick and get positive results?

How does one tell their boss (owner of the company) that you are burnt out? Does anyone like ID work? Currently doing work at a PI/Medmal plaintiffs firm while in school and trying to figure out where I’ll be happiest post-grad. I LOVE it, but don’t know if ID will provide more security. For context, I had a, albeit, short career prior to law school and will 30 when I graduate in May. Comp and WLB are important given my later start.

I’m currently discontent with my income.
(3rd year. Salary=80k and no performance incentive. I brought in $1.4mm AFTER partners claimed over half of fees on my big cases.)
I see CJL offers an incentive+ base but I’m curious about that structure.
Any good or bad firm culture to speak of?
Is it impossible to actually earn a respectable incentive bonus?
Am I going to have some partner come cut me out of any cases where I might actually make a solid fee?

I received a job offer from a PI firm (MVA and tractor trailer cases) in Houston, Texas; the bonus proposed was 2.5% of attorney’s fees for any cases settled each quarter. We are assigned 50 cases a quarter and the top attorney clears $25K each quarter. This is my first time working at a PI firm. Can anyone share any guidance? Is 2.5% industry standard? Is it realistic to settle/resolve that many cases? I am trying to learn more about this niche before I counter-offer and attempt to negotiate.

Here in my jx, in little league/entry level court, it’s pretty typical judges award 2x the medical bills.
