I’ve learned that saying “I’m happy to assist, but not lead” turns people away. I’m more than happy to lend a hand but I’m not about to do your whole PPT or Excel chart for your division.
Finally learning to say “no” has been one of the best tools in my arsenal.
I find that when you work in Supply Chain, you have the E-2-E process knowledge. It’s very typical to be the go-to source when others prefer to hit the “easy” button rather than put in the initial work themselves. On the flip side, if there is a staff shortage, there may be the need to go beyond expectations to fill in the gaps when there is no one else capable.
I'm the opposite..I will jump in and do whatever is needed whether asked or not, inside or outside my job responsibilities, in order to keep the flow of the business running, to pick up slack or to help.

It's not saying NO that's important, it's knowing WHEN to say NO. And knowing the best answer is “let me help you so YOU can finish.”
Jumping into everything to be “integral” can quickly turn into, “that guy will do it.” You become not important but a place to dump work.
Say NO when you feel you are being used and not valued.
Say YES when it's your job or responsibility or wont get completed otherwise.
Say “let me help” when it's important but you can't devote more than partial energy to it.
