How reasonable is it for a client or direct manager to expect you and your team to be available for unscheduled calls during business hours, and be unhappy if someone doesn't answer the phone (or skype/teams/etc) call?

It’s reasonable to expect employees to be available during business hours by phone, email, text, or IM. It’s unreasonable to expect that everyone will always answer or respond right away.

Any thoughts on why it is unreasonable? Justification given was that pre-covid, it was fine to walk to people's desk in an unscheduled way, and being gone instead of there working raised questions.

Good managers / companies recognize that wfh means we must be productive but can have periods of unavailability from 9-5. There’s also plenty of studies showing “productive hours” in a 9-5 setting are typically 3 hours or less a day. I might be out, I might be educating a child, I might be focusing on a work deliverable. Any are perfectly reasonable for not being immediately available all the time on command.

Exactly what KPMG 1 said. There shouldn’t be the expectation that you need to answer immediately - this is the growing issue of slack and video culture. If someone walks to my desk - I am allowed to tell them I have a few things to finish up and I will schedule some time with them. This should also apply virtually. If they didn’t schedule it, they shouldn’t presume your unscheduled time is “free” time. Often it’s the time we are busiest trying to get our actual work done in between all the meetings.

I don’t mind not being answered right away but I get irritated when I get a message 15 mins later that says “oh sorry I’m running a few errands and and I’ll be back in an hour” when there’s a lot going on.

Tax question for any Accenture people who were part of the layoffs in August...did you see anything weird with state withholding on your W2? I relocated from VA to NJ in early 2020 and my state withholding switched to NJ when I moved. However (and I never noticed this at the time), all of my earnings, including severance, paid out PTO, and COBRA true up, are shown as taxable income in both states. My tax accountant is scratching his head.

Hi fishes - I’m with an MBB as a 2y Partner looking to move to B4, for a bunch of reasons. In active conversations with two of them. While compensation levels seem similar for now, the other posts on this bowl suggest we end up making more at B4 than MBB. (Referring to the 1.5M number of a y4 partner at b4). What is the real trajectory that people here have seen at B4? And how much of that is bonus - base - other components?
