It’s reasonable to expect employees to be available during business hours by phone, email, text, or IM. It’s unreasonable to expect that everyone will always answer or respond right away.
Any thoughts on why it is unreasonable? Justification given was that pre-covid, it was fine to walk to people's desk in an unscheduled way, and being gone instead of there working raised questions.

Good managers / companies recognize that wfh means we must be productive but can have periods of unavailability from 9-5. There’s also plenty of studies showing “productive hours” in a 9-5 setting are typically 3 hours or less a day.
I might be out, I might be educating a child, I might be focusing on a work deliverable. Any are perfectly reasonable for not being immediately available all the time on command.
Exactly what KPMG 1 said. There shouldn’t be the expectation that you need to answer immediately - this is the growing issue of slack and video culture. If someone walks to my desk - I am allowed to tell them I have a few things to finish up and I will schedule some time with them. This should also apply virtually.
If they didn’t schedule it, they shouldn’t presume your unscheduled time is “free” time. Often it’s the time we are busiest trying to get our actual work done in between all the meetings.
I don’t mind not being answered right away but I get irritated when I get a message 15 mins later that says “oh sorry I’m running a few errands and and I’ll be back in an hour” when there’s a lot going on.
