Here's what I do. I'm not sure if it will work for you.
1. If I'm happy where I am and I was just interviewing out of curiosity. I'll give them a price that will make me leave... that number to me is some astronomical number.
2. If I'm not happy where i am, i wait for them to name the price. I'll tell them, let's talk about that later, after we hear about the responsibilities etc.
Oh wow! Kinda surprised with the likes... I'll add: both have always worked.
I'm usually an easy-to-please kind of guy and politics don't bother me, so quite contented with workplaces pretty easily. My default is usually number 1.
My experience with using 1: if you do it fast enough, you will catch the recruiter off guard. Loudly shout your number. You must have this number ready from day one. You can feel the sudden silence or the snickering laugh... the former = maybe too high, the latter = maybe too low.
Of course if you really need a new job, do number 2 :) make it personal to the responsibilities. I always say : I believe the pay should match the responsibility. Until i find out what's that, we shouldn't be talking about the price.
This one is pretty good, though exclusively for folks who have applied for visas it is a legally disclosed range: https://h1bdata.info/
Just be careful with this data, talent is nearly always underpaid by 40% for anyone brought over from the UK.
When an interviewer asks what I’m hoping for, I tell them it’s hard to say without better understanding the role and responsibilities better. at this point a bad recruiter will usually offer the range (eg 70-80K) and then I’ll say “80k hmm” without any change in tone and let them start describing other negotiations they can leverage (eg flexible start date, signing bonus), more generous health insurance or PTO, etc. a good recruiter will offer to let me know more about the role, set up meetings between me and other people at the company, help me understand the kinds of work I’d be doing in my first year there, tell me about how recent pitches have been going and what my role could be on them
Said that, she still wants a number.
I’m willing to negotiate but my last salary is at least $30K off what I’m seeing on LinkedIn and Indeed. I’ll negotiate but that’s a huge hit I’m not sure I’m willing to take.
I came from the outside and I'm pretty sure that I am plus $30k from the low. That being said I was way underpaid from my last place.
The website estimates are usually very low.
Ask what the range for the position is and answer accordingly to that information.
Good answer and reply you had. Never really heard of this approach before but I like it. Gonna use this as I’m in the search for a new job. Thanks
Does TBWA really pay that well? Wow.
