Ha, maybe we should swap roles. I’m a similar number of years out and a service partner. I want my own clients, so I don’t have to live at the whims of the rainmaker.
Basically, the grass is not greener.
Lol, yeah, it's a pipe dream. But there are a few firms where you could be a service "Counsel" if you're looking.
But likely not at $400k
This is not a pipe dream. My group is seeking that exact thing in a lateral (ie, we have the need for a 10-15 year talented lawyer who can manage clients, mentor associates, and handle work but need not bring over any portable business because we can generate it).
Where is your office?
Not a pipe dream but don’t expect that your comp in the new job will keep pace with the market. In a few years, when your kids are older, you may wish that you never left that other, more demanding (but, by then, higher paying and probably less demanding) job.
It gets easier as you get more experienced. When I think of what I knew 13 years out and what I knew 23 years out, it’s a world of difference! (I’m 40 years out now, and there are VERY few challenges left.)
PS: When I started out, I was making the BL going rate of $23,000. You may look at the world differently if you take the new job and, 10 years from now, the first-year associates you trained are partners, making more money than you AND you’re working for them!
I’m 22 years out, have a reasonably sized book, and just joined a BL firm 18 months ago. I have not had to bill this many hours since I was a first year in a bill mill, and my book only matters when it comes to “Why isn’t it bigger?” While not giving me any comp credit or hours reduction for having one at all. Never been more dissatisfied.
you are welcome to call me
I have options for you.
I know someone who is doing this in NYC and not at a very good firm (PA-based, below market comp, inverse leverage). And didn't come from biglaw, either. Had less than $100k in any given year of originations. I don't know if he's making $400k, but it's very close.
(Will give the name if you're interested)
