I am a senior at a top 50 regional firm and have been here for a year. Prior to this was 2 years at a smaller firm. I am interviewing in industry and have not landed a gig yet. I am wondering if it is because industry folks are not familiar with my firm. I am thinking about making a switch to a top 10 PA firm and sticking it out until manager and then reevaluating a move to industry. If my ultimate goal is to move to industry, would you suggest moving to a larger PA firm for brand recognition?

Sadly, you will get passed over on if the candidate pool is mostly Big4.

I have. I did 4 years in public prior to doing 4 years in industry. The quality of the jobs I qualified for were not that great so I decided to come back to PA and at a larger firm and now I’m getting better opportunities thrown my way than I did the first round of PA. I was at a Top 25 firm (2 years) and Top 100 (2 years).

Wtf is a top 50 regional firm? You mean you work for you mom and dad?

like

A top 50 firm in the US (measured in revenue). Said firm is also located only in a specific region of the country.

PM me for a PwC referral

Welp, if you end up deciding to switch to Big 4, PM me for a Deloitte referral! Best of luck either way

I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

I have 3 years of experience in management operations but also have 6 years of experience with child care, is that why I may be getting rejected? Maybe I’m overthinking my resume? 😅

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!
