I am a working mom of two littles and just got diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive). I”ll be starting meds next week. I’ve never taken a medication for mental health before.

What did you wish you knew/did when you first started your meds?

I’m concerned about irritability (don’t want to take it out on my littles) and being able to wind down appropriately for bed around 10pm.

Any tips and tricks? And med dosage or combos that have worked for you that I should consider?

A bit unrelated, but what prompted you to get tested and what kind of doctor did you go to for the diagnosis?

Forgetfulness, misplacing things, and inability to focus and finish tasks - work and home- increased 10x after my 2nd child in 2023.

I could muddle through and survive but I am curious what help/ improvement a med can give me.

I am low key hoping for a lite ‘Limitless’ experience haha but if the side effects are more trouble than they’re worth, then I can manage without.

like

I experienced some of these symptoms post birth too. I have done some of my own nerd research and I’m pretty sure I have adhd too if tested. I used to think it’s mommy brain for the
Longest amount of time. I have slowed down and able to manage my work and life.

Remember to eat before you take them and hydrate! You might lose your complete appetite and potentially get caught up in actually being able to complete things. I've been on Vyvanse and it always did me wonders. 😊

Thanks! Not mad about the appetite effect haha

This advice is for extended release adderall, cuz that's what I take.

1) I try to make sure I eat a little something before taking the medication, I find that better than taking it on empty stomach.

2) I also find it extremely important that I eat throughout the day and drink proper water. It's unfortunate because the medication can suppress your appetite and make you not feel like eating lunch, but then skipping meals makes side effects way worse for me (headaches, etc).

3) I recommend starting on the smallest dose and then increasing as needed, being on an overly strong dose increases risk of side effects and also is worse from the standpoint of building tolerance.

4) I strongly do not recommend taking the medication inconsistently, or only taking it "as needed". I think your body needs to get used to it and build a little tolerance, it's meant to be taken every day, or at most skipping weekends. When I take it inconsistently or skip too many days, it throws me off a lot.

5) Don't have anything with a bunch of vitamin C for roughly 1 to 2 hours before and after taking the medication. It interferes with the absorption of them meds. No orange juice for breakfast.

like

Forgot one thing. If you're sensitive with sleep, as I am, I do not recommend taking it in the afternoon at all. If I haven't taken it by 11am, I err on the side of not taking that day. Skipping days isn't good either, but I find taking it too late in the day can mess up my sleep. And I prioritize my sleep.

Take your medications first thing in the morning (before 11 am) and you should be able to wind down for bed on time. Take them with protein so it stays in your system longer (you should still be able to go to bed on time). Avoid taking vitamin C (watch out for supplements, multi vitamins, orange juice, etc) within the first hour before or after taking your meds because it will cause you to excrete them. Also, magnesium can cause the medications to stay in your system for longer than ideal so I’d avoid consuming magnesium supplements during the day.

I recommend taking it as early as possible. Personally, I would take it at 7:00 AM and stay up until 1:00 or 2:00 AM. For you, I suggest taking it around 5:00 or 6:00 AM. Be prepared for its effects to start about an hour after taking it.

It’s highly advisable to eat within the first hour after taking it, as you might not feel hungry again until much later in the day.

Additionally, Vyvanse caused me to grind my teeth. If you have bruxism, I recommend using a daytime mouthguard to protect your teeth.

Also within an hour of taking it you can expect to make an evacuation so I would plan for that.

Advice for Of Counsel roles? I am of counsel at a firm where I can set my own rate and keep a percentage of collections, which varies slightly depending on whether the client is one I generated or not. I’m finding that a lot of my work is for firm clients where the lawyer negotiated a flat fee (and the hours worked are less, due to efficiency etc). While I act incredibly fast if not immediately with some, I sometimes take 1-2 weeks with couple of hours worthy ones. Sometimes I ignore, procrastinate or simply other more urgent things come up to increase the delay. Also I work with 3 managers in my team which doesn’t help with expectations nor guidance. Any tips pls?

I do everything well at my job except for attention to detail within my excel files & emails. Will taking ADHD medication really fix this?
