If you are already a pharmacist I would not go for physician assistant. The job is stressful and many times unfulfilling due to admin telling you how to practice and trying to squeeze every little bit of money they can make out of you for profits. Forget your lunch, get ready to take some work home and never have enough time for family and friends. It looks prestigious from the outside but many of us are just treated “workers” with no respect for our intense medical knowledge or our innate compassion. I would never do it again.
First getting into PA program is not like NP, namely just showing up with money gets you in. There were 1240 applicants for the 42 seats in my class. Many apply for years. Candidates with actual patient contact are preferred. The process for me was nearly a year. Not trying to dissuade you, you will never look for a job as a PA, they come to you. Good luck.
Yes! I find it odd that nurses can now get online degress and call themselves FNP's as long as they just pay up. They then land a position over a PA because they require less paperwork/supervision. And this is not against all the fine FNP's I have worked with. It is against the fact that NCCPA does nothing but collect our money, and the AAPA took PA's loosing jobs during COVID to realize they NEED TO DO MORE.
Honestly use your contacts and see if you get into MSL or CRA. Similar pay and you can move up the ladder
PA pays can get capped based on specialty, only way to make more is if you work more which can get old pretty fast
If you are salaried you dilute your pay just to do the right thing by the 25 or more patients you see a day. In the 8 hours shift which is really nine hours because you never get a break. If you complain then a large organization will sic HR on you with artificial evaluations so you are too scared to protest. Many states are at will hiring and firing. However if you use the atwill clause and walk a way without notice they will try to make you think they have recourse against you when they don't but then state they will make sure you cannot work in thei hospital, or city, or whatever again.
I applied to PA school as a second career. Being out of undergrad for 7 years I had to repeat all the science pre-reqs. All the programs I saw required your undergrad science be completed in the last last 6 years. No exceptions. That means retaking all those classes. That’s not to discourage you, but I repeated them all in 1.5 years. It was work.
If you kept your pharmacy license up and continuing education have you considered pivoting into working for a pharmaceutical company?
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your advice. I did not realize that the prerequisites would need to be repeated if they were done over six years ago.
Well if you work. You pay them. Your get passing grades. You go to rotations as scheduled. What is the worst thing they can dod to you.? If they kick you out they wont get paid. I know a radiation technician who had her working affect her ability to land a good job and graduate by zero percentl
So Cal is always competitive because everyone wants to live here. It can easily take 3 months to secure a position. if you are selective.
