You need more partners feeding you. How are assignments distributed in your firm?
Hi Teacher! Thank you for your time and response. My firm is a free market firm. I am out of a satellite office. The partner I do most of my work for is located in the same office. I’ve made a habit of reaching out to different partners and traveling to other offices. I’ve been added on a couple of cases, but it’s not panning out as much as I had hoped. All the feedback I’ve gotten has been positive to date. It feels awkward to reach out numerous times to ask for work or be included on different cases with different partners, especially if it’s a partner I’ve reached out to but have been ignored by.
Can you see when new cases come in? Via conflicts or engagement letters? That could be a good time to reach out and express interest in being staffed on a case. It can be hard to bring in a young associate on already-involved cases.
It sounds like you’re doing all the right things, and I don’t think it’s an unreasonable amount of time to still be ramping up as a new young associate if you’re getting positive feedback. Would you feel comfortable mentioning to the main partner you’re working with that you have bandwidth and looking to meet other partners, etc? That may depend on the relationship. When I was a young associate I was lucky to have a partner looking out for me that went door to door asking people to direct work my way because she could vouch for my work product thus far.
That’s great. Again sounds like you’re taking all the right steps. Litigation goes in phases and has some really busy times and some slow times, so getting a solid work flow can just take time.
Also, not all conflicts checks turn into cases so I’d see if you can tell when they materialize. But it’s a good way to get pointed to what may be coming down the line.
