When I freelanced, I charged 50% of the remaining expected compensation as a kill fee if the assignment ended earlier than expected. There is a huge opportunity cost to committing to a company for that long and taking oneself out of the running for other gigs. Even if the agency was reluctant to pay the fee, the discussion usually resulted in a longer notice period or them finding something else for me to do for them for a week or two.
My general rule is that if you booked me for X amount of time then I’ve begun turning down jobs for that time. I would try to negotiate a kill fee or some level of reimbursement that covers you for the jobs you turned down that would cover the same time period.
I just put a min amount of time required from both sides to notify of contract ending. That way it works both ways. Usually 30 days
Kill fee / # of business days notice if either party needs to end the engagement. That really blows, I’m sorry to hear!
Awesome thanks for the help all!
