I found a student crying in the bathroom. Turns out she's dealing with serious family issues at home. I'm a teacher, not a therapist, and feel out of my depth. How do you balance giving support with knowing your limits?

Let the counselor know immediately! This could just be a small dent in much bigger issues that teachers don’t have qualifications to handle.

You don't need to be a therapist to make someone feel better. Just give the student a hug if they allow you to and make them feel that there are people around them that they can talk to. We may not be able to suggest a solution to their problem but we can help them ease the feeling. I've seen cases like this and mostly it fall into depression.

This is so heartbreaking. Definitely reach out to the counselor. There may be a bigger issue going on, and as teachers, it is best to share with an admin or counselor for the benefit of the student.

Tell the counselors. You can absolutely be there to support, but as teacher you already have too much on your plate to also be the kind of lifeline students sometimes need. Get the student connected to resources so they have options. They’ll feel more empowered and they’ll have a bigger support system. Plus the counselors are often connected to community resources that can help the student outside school hours.

We have a campus counselor. I would refer this student immediately. But the simple thing is just checking in frequently, so they know someone sees them and cares.

You can't solve her problems, but you can connect her with resources that can help. Let her know about your school counselor, social worker, or any outside support groups in the area.

Well, I was the one who broke it off. I couldn’t get him to love me the way I needed or even respect me enough. It’s been 6 weeks of not seeing each other. We messaged this week. He doesn’t get it…. His messages show he still doesn’t know what he wants. Yet, if I am totally honest, I hate how part of me wishes he would do a grand gesture/finally decide to be a better man. It’s delusional. It’s crazy how love can be so rosy, sweet & blinding that the red flags seem surmountable.

A therapist said to close her door if we don’t want to see it but it’s more than that. She needs this important life skill & I don’t know how to help. How do I figure out spending with my SO? Initially I was paying for 90% of stuff (no actual bills, just going out). I talked to her and said we need to be more even. She was never proactive. She never takes out her card and only venmos me if I send her the request. She lets Venmos sit for weeks before paying them. I still let a lot of things slide.

I'm a Canadian on the TN visa working in the US and planning on maxing my Roth IRA (6k) and will have enough left to max my 401k this year, but am not sure if I should just use a taxable account over 401k due to tax considerations when I move back to Canada (likely 1-2 years from now). Any thoughts here? I don't think I'll have enough RRSP room to move 401k>IRA>RRSP and I would prefer to not have to file US taxes every year in retirement for withdrawls if I left the 401k in the US.
