I’m not but I noticed that too. When I’m at a store or even looking online, pretty much every wine I see is either Californian or Italian. Of course I see others here and there, but the vast majority of them are Californian wines.
I’d drink California wine if they would tone down the fruit-forwardness. California was making great wines in the ‘70s but wines today are over-ripe. I stick with almost all European and some SA.
Thing is, you have to hunt for non-fruit forward options. Sure, they exist, but you have to go through lots of producers and determine what style you find acceptable. I don’t want to go through that trouble and buy European.
Because Napa?
Because California accounts for almost 85% of US wine production? And that number goes even further up when you factor in product quality or price.
Then consider that international shipping is still a huge mess and expensive and it’s easy to see why there are fewer imports on the shelves.
That’s true for wine in general, not a CA-specific observation.
Because there is a foreign wine shortage in the US due to broken supply lines and high import tariffs leaving only CA wine available at most places
Because we have the best wine
California wine is incredible and the 4 brands you highlighted are wonderful mainstream gateways but not anywhere close to the best of what can be found.
