I’m breaking the habit, tonight.
Wow. I’ve never heard of six months severance in advertising.
Do you have any leverage or inside info that might make the CEO more willing to give you more money, or are you basically begging for mercy? Are you prepared to turn down 6 months severance in order to scare the company with a lawsuit or other risk? (Accepting severance often comes with you signing an agreement to not sue, among other things.)

If you are going to negotiate and they won't do anything about length, ask for it lump sum to avoid affecting unemployment

A lump sum won’t necessarily affect unemployment eligibility. First payment just needs to be paid to you at least 30 days after your termination date. Can be in installments or lump sum. This is for NY. Check your state laws.

Without knowing anything about your length of service at the company and contributions over the years, just your title and the little you shared, I’d say six months is a generous offer. If you have a case for more, by all means have the conversation. Prepare in advance, know what you will say so you don’t stumble and misspeak. Be calm and professional. This is a conversation between two business people. I think unemployment will be affected whether you get lump sum or not because (at least as of year ago), they calculate for what duration of time it’s meant to cover, based on your normal paycheck amount. So chances are your unemployment benefits will be delayed by six months. Rules might be different now though. Consider what you would accept aside from more pay, perhaps your company laptop?
I didn't even know severance was a thing advertising, let alone 6 months of it! Are you at an agency?

6 months severance is really generous, IMO. Take it and start looking for a new job yesterday.
I would add, remember that you may have to come back to these people for references. You can ask for more, asking never hurts, but I would really think about how you’re wording it and what kind of terms you ultimately leave on.

If they are owned by a holding company, assume anything that happens within the agency will be accessible to the entire holding company network.

6 months severance after a year of work at your level is the most generous thing I’ve ever heard. Are you actually just posting this to brag? Take the money and run, before they change their mind.

Try to get 8 months and lumped sum. I Dont think a year is doable.

If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Ask for what you need and explain why. Worse case, they say no.
Will this affect your visa status? If so, taking the severance spread out may technically keep you on the books, forgoing deportation.

Thanks for the great advice!
I’m working one year as ACD at this agency. I’m in a foreign country where employees are protected pretty well and it’s very difficult to fire people although covid probably will make it easier. I want to avoid a lawsuit and know the company is generous to me as they prefer not letting me go. But I have to protect myself and my family financially as well.
Ohhhh I was gonna say. 6 months for one year as an ACD is a dream
Don’t listen to the others about taking lump sum without checking COBRA status first. Usually the continued pay check also means health coverage for the same duration.
Cobra may not be relevant because OP is in a different country.
Also call an attorney in your country.
