I have 10 years of experience in IT Audit. I hate IT Audit and was not sad when I got laid off. I want to do something as a cyber technologist. I got offered a job as a Tier 1 SOC Analyst. The job seems cool as I will be working with SIEM fielding alerts. The only kicker is the salary is really low at $75000 a year. I left IT Audit at $133000. I know and was not expecting 133k for the SOC job but is $75k for the DC area low? If I take the SOC job how long before I make 100k by job switch

75k sounds about right for a Tier 1 SOC.

If you truly hate IT Audit, can you maybe explore the option to shadow someone or be involved in a more technical project at Deloitte?

I've done my fair share at a SOC & take my anecdote with a grain a salt. The SOC is often a skeleton crew and you spend the majority of the time chasing ghosts / responding to blips that the software spits out. A glorified helpdesk support, responding to tickets from people complaining about an app being blocked by the firewall.

like

I agree with C1. SOC will burn you out. IT Audit would be a much more peaceful job. However, if you still want to get out of IT Audit, maybe try for some other areas of cybersecurity like IAM, Cloud Security, VM, etc.

like

If I were you, I’d try to find a GRC manager role at a small or medium sized organization. And after that, try to seek a role that allows you to do some other projects on the side. Depending on the organization, it’s not uncommon to be involved in some Secops work. This allows you to have a better work life balance while still getting some exposure to technical aspects.

like

That seems to be a good option for OP. Cyber security governance is a good route into the cyber security field because IT audit skills when it comes to being detail oriented are very transferable to that type of work, and if I’m not mistaken folks and cyber security governance get paid better.

C1 thanks for your response. I tried to get on or observe a cyber project on several occasions but was unable to get onto anything. Sent lots of emails.

What did you do after SOC? What is salary of somebody after 2 to 3 years of SOC expetience?

like

Everyone thanks your responses appreciate the inputs. Gives me something to think on!

2 years and you can switch and definitely should hit 100k

CSC1 What opportunities are available to somebody with 2 to 3 years SOC experience?

Senior SOC Analyst most likely. However, people are able to switch to more generalist roles at smaller organizations.

I’m on the same boat as you… I hate Audit in general… 10+ years of audit experience too. I have experience in Cyber too, but I’m aware that if I go to technical roles like SOC analyst, the salary cliff will be notable…75K I think is low but doesn’t sound too bad imo; it always depend on the industry, the typo of company, how you sold yourself… etc. but if you feel that’s the right path, and if you already have a plan to not feel the difference financially, and this will make you happy just go for it. You could start for 10-12 months gain experience and obtain a certification, apply for other roles, and in two years be earning 100k…even more…

Thanks. I have my CISA and a Graduate Certificate in IT Security. The job I am being offered is for a Federal Agency (as a contractor) so I am hoping in 12 to 18 months I can go somewhere else and make at least 100k. Do you know how hard it is to get into security engineering in building and configuring seems after a soc analyst role?

Still no compensation revision given for employees who have been associated for long term (Say 4+ years)

Folks - Is there any compensation revision planned in the near future... considering the after effects of q1 fy23 attrition rise ?

Hi Everyone. I completed my 1 year in EY in October 2022. And in my profile, they have updated it to Senior Analyst now. But that was a progression that happens every year and I have not received the incremented salary.

Now that they are giving increments to everyone, will I receive both progression and increment or my progression will be counted as increment.

Highly confused.
