I have 5 years worth of experience in private client services as a tax generalist. My view, I don't really enjoy tax much, but I see that no one wants to do tax and is a great business with a lot of market share since most accountants aren't great at bringing in business which I am. Therefore, I was thinking of buying a small firm and taking out a business loan/sba. Is this a good option in today's market and how do you make a valuation on a firm?

Big4 has clear trajectory and interesting work.

I am contemplating a move to industry working at a VC, Tax Director role east coast. Looks like it will be primarily overseeing compliance with some aspect of advising on structures etc. There is another tax reporting head above me.

The potential comp is the low 200k with a 10% bonus (still higher than what I am making). I feel this is pretty low for VC standards but maybe my standards are also too high. I have generally seen 25% bonus with carry.

Any thoughts?

Should you discuss salary range with an internal company recruiter prior to setting up an interview? With external recruiters it’s pretty easy to talk about the expected range. I am trying to avoid wasting all of our time if i get to the last interview and they are expecting a salary that is too low for me.

If you make it to senior manager at big four can you leave and become partner or director at mid size firm? Is this hard to do? I know there is a lot of politics at big four and have no interest staying in a senior manager role for 6-8 years and risk a chance of still not becoming partner. Also I got a long way to go before senior manager fyi.
