I got a call from the Google recruiter about my L7 em interview Google She said I did overwhelmingly good on all interviews except one had mixed feedback on a system design. No surprise because it was not a good interview. The recruiter said i had a choice to go to hiring committee, give referrals they could call about my system design or take another system design interview. I’m not confident about the system design because of the bad experience I had with the previous interviewer. What should I do?

Often times, levels and titles within companies don’t match titles out in the world. A level II at one company could be a I or III somewhere else. But a Quality Designer doesn’t sound like a Software Engineer role. Did you research the Software Engineer II role? Does it make sense or is it actually an oversight?
Prepare to discuss your skills and experience since you applied for a Quality Designer role. Look for alignment between the job and your background. If the discussion falls out of your comfort zone into areas outside your experience, stay positive and express your willingness to learn.
There is no trick question. Just do the research and be ready to interview.
Good luck.
Rising Star
When I see your title there is a possibility that the recruiter read your resume and saw that the SE would be a better fit. Regardless of ranking, the designer and engineering roles ate different career paths, so you may not even be considered for the designer role, but do have a background that shows thst you can actually perform th SE role.
Be prepared to speak to both roles, though this very well may be a standard SE pre-interview. No trick questions, this first call will be the recruiter trying to determine if you are a fit for the SE position.
Congrats on landing the interview. Tonight, focus on 3 short STAR stories: a time you solved a problem, learned quickly, and worked well with others. Keep each answer around 60 to 90 seconds, and prepare 2 questions about the team and role expectations. If you want a low-pressure voice run-through, https://aural-ai.com can help you practice aloud.
