I have received an offer for the position of Senior Analyst at a well-known media agency, but I believe I am being lowballed. I have 4-5 years of experience in marketing, and I recently graduated with a Master's degree in Analytics. I am being offered $70,000 + benefits, and although I should negotiate, I am scared of losing this offer in this market.

As a POC immigrant woman (also very anxious), I seek suggestions, opinions, & statements to build my confidence in negotiating.

Sr Analyst with slightly more experience and a Master’s in Analytics, also at a big agency and I’m at $90K so definitely a major lowball- $70K is close to what some of my peers were making as entry level analysts just a few years ago- I would push negotiations to $95K and see if you can get at least $85K-$90K

"I appreciate the offer and I'm excited about the opportunity to work at your company. My research shows me that the salary range for this position is $93k-$133k. Based on my professional experience as (position) at (company), and my education, I'd like to make somewhere in the range from $110k-$120k annually. I'd love to connect to negotiate terms and see if we can find a middle ground. Thank you"

You can ask for 85-95.
Emphasis on masters degree, work ex and student loans.

Having hired over 100 roles I’ll tell you that your personal circumstances don’t matter at all, and leaning on them makes you look more junior.

WPP is an accountancy that does marketing. Make your negotiation about your value in the role and the market rates. Market rates remind them that they won’t get anyone cheaper and they are losing money fishing for a fish they’ll never catch.

What city? What company? Check Glassdoor and be certain if you’re being lowballed

When I got an offer between an Analytics Manager and Data Analyst role, the DA position was ballpark range $85-$95k, and management was $110-$120k. Before accepting an offer, I would ask if it’s negotiable and do your research.

like

Always negotiate. Always always always. Make sure to have justification for your requests though.

It depends on if they think your masters is valuable to the position. Not all degrees fit the job so they might not value it. A lot of companies, stupidly, don’t understand how valuable analytics to marketing. In there mind it’s like hiring a cleaner with a degree in lawn mowing. Not relevant.

A lot of companies also use “analyst” in the title when they really mean “generalist.” The offer you got implies they are looking for a generalist, in which case your degree is not as relevant.

If either of these are the case, this job might not be the best fit.

like

to be honest im not sure why youre applying for a senior analyst role with your experience. its a pretty junior position and is priced accordingly. it will be mostly grunt work and you wont be coaching a team.

They’re probably trying to test the market because of the change in conditions but I’m working as a senior analyst with less experience and no masters for 90…

I’m in Chicago and make 65 + benefits as an analyst so you’re def being lowballed lol

I think (and bear in mind I'm UK based) you should ask for more. Say you really like the company and role but have been offered more elsewhere and is there anything they can do to match it. IMHO by asking this way you are not closing any doors but putting the suggestion out there. Don't ask you don't get.

like

You are being lowballed severely. I was hired (at a different agency) as a Senior Analyst ten years ago at 80k.

like

With that experience and masters you can shoot for analytics manager position , in Nyc salary for that should be around $120k. Ask them if salary is negotiable, that seems very low. I stopped talking with GroupM recruiters cause they love to low ball so much, if I see any of them sending me messages on LinkedIn (which happens a lot) I just tell them no. Also if you want higher salary look at independent agencies, they tend to pay more for analytics positions. Also a immigrant poc woman and lesbian.

like

This is true. With that experience you can try for manager roles.
If you’re desperate due to visa timing then go for GroupM and then try internally or outside on your own timeline.

From another POC woman in the industry, you got this!!! If they are low balling you, you can let them know what market salaries look like for someone with your experience & qualifications.

likeuplifting

Definitely should be getting 95K at least with the experience and them the masters on top of it should cement you more. (I am NY based)

likehelpful

It's not THAT low for a Sr Analyst at an agency. Agency titles tend to be pretty inflated for the pay. That would be extremely low for the same title at a large Tech Brand, for instance.

like

they also tend to be pretty inflated for the experience. we've got kids who can barely wipe their noses thinking they should be ADs

I’m a senior analyst with the same experience at smaller agency and no masters degree making 93K. And my pay is on the mid to higher end of the industry pay range. You’re definitely being lowballed. And never be scared to negotiate! You have every right to advocate for yourself like they do, and jobs rarely pull their offer just because you ask if more is feasible. And if they do, you don’t want to work there. I hope this helps!

like

$70k feels like intern pay tbh

like

If you’re comfortable, may I ask what city you’re in? It’s not super low balled, but it could be higher even in a lower cost of living area (previous Sr Analyst)

You deserve more! Push for 90K-98K if you’re in NYC.
I’m a prior Sr. Analyst in a lower cost of living area.

Any update?

Hi fishes,

I received an offer from big 4 with 60% hike. My managers wants to retain and I asked them to match if you want me to be retained.
Now I got a call from GPM yesterday. He used harsh words like "being greedy" "selfish" etc and offered me 30% in the end.
I politely declined but he asked me to reconsider as he said "it would be unfair for the org for you to leave so soon."

Let me know a proper response.

Also what do you think of this behavior by GPM?
