I interviewed for a job, and the internal recruiter called me today, asking for my current salary. I said I'm severely underpaid (true btw), but then went ahead to tell him my current salary. I then asked him what the salary range for the new role is, and he said he couldn't tell me. I found this very annoying as I feel like I've now put myself at a disadvantage and could potentially be offered a low salary that's based on my current.
He's calling me back on Monday to discuss offer. HELP :(

1) Never accept the first offer, always counter.
2) If they low ball you, consider it your first warning that place isn’t for you.
3) Always round up your current salary within a few thousand.
4) If this offer doesn’t work out, remember, what is meant for you, won’t pass you by.
5) It’s ok to be sad for a day if it doesn’t work out, but only for that day. This isn’t a setback, only practice for the next interview.

#2 - you hit the nail on the head. This is more indicative of culture than some may think.

You are not obligated to share your current salary, and nor should you. You counter by asking whats the salary range for this position. You can also offer a range of what salary range you are looking for, but never ever disclose what you currently make

The recruiters are trained to do what they do and that might not be the culture of the firm or the team you will be working with. You should prepare thoroughly for salary negotiation and set a number below which you won't join the firm.

I know recruiters can be very persistent when asking for current salary. Try to redirect and say based on the responsibilities of the role you’re interviewing for you’re targeting a salary of x to x, shoot high but not too high.

I don’t tell them my salary. I say “I am currently interviewing for roles in the $X to $Y range”.

i never tell recruiters what im making. what i tell them is that i wont consider anything below xxx, xxx. Usually 20k to 30k more than what im making. had 7 offers back in december with that range. alsways aim very high to see their response. i have some where recruiters said its out of their range amd thas the end of the convo. dont waste time. give them what u want.

Thank you all for your comments. I'm in the UK so it's not illegal to ask here. Fingers crossed, I'll keep you updated after the negotiation tomorrow

How’d it go?

It’s also illegal for recruiters to ask what you currently make in many states. Don’t disclose. M1 has good advise.

UPDATE: I didn't end up taking the job. Although the amount they offered me was actually market value and in my preferred range, I knew I was still being low-balled and I countered their offer. I renegotiated both the pay and the grade they were offering (they offered Consultant, I wanted a Senior Consultant title).
The company essentially refused my counter-ask and said to let them know 'how my other interviews go', i.e., when I get other offers.
Well shortly after, I got two other job offers that were both paying higher than company A, so I'm quite pleased 🙂

Thank you everyone for your input!

Yeah don’t take that offer. They shouldn’t be basing the income of your current role on your next. Prepare to decline or negotiate.

When they ask your current salary, you provide the number for the absolute lowest amount you would take at the next position.

Oh wow I need to read better

Sharing your comp with an internal recruiter is bad because they work in the interest of the company. External is fine if you trust them and set a clear salary goal since they get a higher fee if you get a higher comp

I currently make 78k at Lockheed but I’m not doing what I’d like to be doing and i felt stuck and after many conversations with my manager and no solution in sight, I started applying elsewhere.
