First of all, take a deep breath. You are going to be okay. Reach out to your former employer and ask if they would be willing to provide you with any written recommendations you can use for your job search.
Take a day to collect yourself and let yourself be upset. Then dust off your resume, update your LinkedIn profile, clean up your remaining social media accounts if needed, and apply for unemployment.
Look through your subscriptions and budget and see if there is any fat you can trim. If things are really tight and you are healthy enough, you can earn a couple hundred bucks this month donating plasma.
Reach out to your colleagues and friends and let them know you are looking and would love to hear about any opportunities they know of.
Watch a few YouTube videos on interviewing tips and get a nice outfit washed pressed, and ready. You are going to be fine!
Thanks so much for this! I will definitely do these. ❤️
I've been there before too. Don't take it personal, because your employer probably didn't do it for personal reasons (and also remember that if it WAS personal, you sure as hell don't want to be there anyway).
All of the advice from the above reply is totally spot on too.
Good luck and stay positive 💪♥️
Thank you!!
Please don’t feel too bad. People get laid off all the time. I was recently laid off for the first time in 17 years! Truthfully, I was happy about it too, because the company I was at was such a toxic mess. Start sending out resumes and look for a position that you will excel in. Good luck!
This happened to me 13 years ago. Take time to be sad. Then get that resume in order. You can do this. I got a better job! It's just putting you on a better path. I promise!
I've worked in real estate law for since 2003.. I've been laid off 5 times. The real estate market, especially residential, has been a roller coaster ride for 20yrs and it's been hard. I'm trying to go in-house as a corporate paralegal or contract administrator hoping there's more job stability & I'm able to expand my skillset with hopefully a bit less stress than a law firm. I can't keep going through this every 2yrs or so. BUT I've always landed on my feet. Things always work out the way they're supposed to.
Thank you.
Hugs! The first time it happened to me I was 41 years old and even though I knew it was coming it will still a shock. I underestimated the feeling of rejection. Then I got laid off again a few years later, and last year I got fired after working for someone two weeks because the supervisor had an issue with me before I even started. I’ve found the first time is the worst, After it happens it’s always in the back of your mind that I could happen again and you’re better prepared.
Please, k ow that you are not alone. I was laid off on October 31, 2024. I was pretty upset and literally cried for a week straight ( after updating my resume and sending it out). I was told by a friend to really take some time and examine my work life and personal life to figure out why I was laid off (not the reason my attorney provided). What I figured out for example is that I was not making enough money to truly care for my family. I was barely keeping my head above water most months and others I was drowning (relying on credit cards etc). I knew I was earning less then some other paralegals around me but I am very loyal and absolutely loved the attorney I worked for so much so I got comfortable and was afraid to move on. I also had a lot of freedom as it related to my work schedule. As a single mom with children that have mental and physical disabilities I needed (and valued) that freedom. Today, I do not need as much freedom as I have 2 adult children and 1 teenager but I now know I deserve to get paid a lot more then I was. I have experience and an very dedicated. I am willing and able to commit a significant amount of time to a future employer.
I would suggest figuring out what you need from an employer and what skills you are brining with you. Do not devalue your work or you as a person. Hopefully, you were able to get a letter of recommendation from your previous employer or direct referrals to mutual associates of that employer. If not I wouldn't be shy about asking for those things ( the sooner the better). I know it is initially very overwhelming but everything will move forward and I believe with you putting forth effort a better opportunity will present itself. Good luck.
