I am in the same boat, been here for 2 months extremely disorganized, high workloads and lots of turnover. A piece of advice, don’t feel bad for setting boundaries on your workload early and speaking up on what you need in order to succeed. Write a list of all the things you need to know. Then in your 1:1 manager identify the must haves from nice tos and just work on learning the mandatories. Everything else will take time and it’s not on you alone to fix it.
If you continue to answer non-urgent evening calls, work late there going to expect it. Remember they need you more than you need them right now, it’s in there best interest to keep you. Don’t live in the past, regret eats me alive. You can’t change it. At the end of the days it’s a job, if it’s not the right fit there will be another role that is. Your going to feel uncomfortable right now, but know everything is temporary. You got this 🤗
Which office are you in? Location?
Second that - don’t judge it on the fear it might be bad. Make it good - be a positive force and contribute passionately but do it within reasonable boundaries.
And talk to your managers - work with them to make it something you enjoy and you excel in. Hopefully, you sought out good people while interviewing, so give them the chance to be good.
Plus, remember - these problems are everywhere!!! And hybrid has pros as well as cons. More valuable to you to make something you’re in better than jumping to a new role in the hope it will solve the issues.
Sorry to hear about your situation. Some level of buyers remorse is always an issue when you switch jobs. Keep in mind we’re in the middle of the great resignation so turnover and people leaving is happening everywhere. It’s part of the new normal. And it’s out of your control.
Focus on what you can control. Your output. The hours you work. Your relationship with your managers and clients. Everything else is just noise. Loud noise, telling you to run, not noise nonetheless.
The ecosystem that is advertising isn’t likely to change anytime soon. You can decide to ride it out or take the time to plan a career switch. It’s highly unlikely a move to another at agency would solve any of the problems you’re experiencing.
FWIW i’m currently looking around for another job and very skeptical about going to any ad agency because any level of normalcy and process just isn’t something you find in advertising anymore.
Hang in there buddy. Are you at least able to get some good work produced? I’m usually willing to make some compromises to get some good pieces of work in my book. But nothing is more important than your mental health and well-being, so if this is taking a toll on you, it’s time for a change. I have heard whispers of people negotiating remote since they are so strapped for talent right now, maybe that’s one way to go about it? But make sure to have some back up options.
Did you just start at VMLY&R? Or are you at another company? DM as im talking to them rn 😣
Oh, sorry, didn’t see your earlier question. Yes, I’m in a big VMLY&R office in the US that’s not NYC.
