I'm curious what the average salary is for an Associate Agent. I'm licensed & do everything after the sale is made as well as refer new business. I have 14 years in the industry but have been at the current company less than a year, so I know that plays a part as well. Anyone in a like-position by chance?State Farm Allstate Travelers

Legally in New York they are not allowed to ask you your salary.
When they ask what you're looking for / expect, say: "I'm negotiable depending on the range you're offering. My first priority is finding the right fit"
However, it's highly unlikely you'll get any good recruiter to disclose that first so don't fight the question too much or play hardball until they actually want you and you've reached the stage of having an offer letter in writing. If they still push for it after you've said the above, which is highly likely, research online the salary ranges for such positions in your ZIP code and share the top third range as your target so when they come back to you, you're more likely to get the average or slightly higher salary percentile. Say: "I'm being considered for positions in the range of $X-Y " (top third range). Don't say "I'm looking, or worse "hoping" for..."
BTW unless you are over $250k you should be getting a min. 20% bumps with each jump.
As soon as they ask my range, I ask them their budget
I want them to tell me what's on the table first before I end up low-balling myself.
do you homework and be prepared for “I am looking for X” - yeah - try and get them to show their cards first but it rarely works.
Many states it’s illegal to ask that question. Make sure you know.
Actually I think they just made it illegal to ask in Cali. But when you give a range, won't they automatically target the lower end?
Uh, pad your current salary $5k?
I agree with the “I’m looking for X-range” approach. They still follow that up with “ok but I need to know what you’re making now” to which I reply “I am currently making X, but again, I’m interested in opportunities in the X dollar range"
Tell them the range you are looking for, starting with the lowest acceptable amount for a move. Tell the recruiters that try to ask your current salary in NYC that you're not sure it's relevant or legal for you to say, while reiterating that you are willing to make a move to a new company for between x and x, base.
Move to California, new laws for 2018 don’t allow employers to ask you about salary history. :-)
Thanks AD1, that's helpful.
I respond that I do not limit my consideration to salary alone and look at total compensation because I’m looking for a professional home. Then bounce it back to them to provide total comp: salary, bonus potential , commission, time off, work remote possibility, etc. Do not show your cards first.
I tell them I'm looking for nothing crazy. Just the fair market rate.
Put the onus on them. They are hiring for a position. Ask them what salary they have it slotted for. Tell them that it's terrible when clients don't share budgets and this is the same thing.
