I really don’t want to have any toasts at my wedding reception other than my dad (father of the bride). We don’t have a wedding party. I have friends I could ask but I know from previous weddings how stressful they find giving toasts. My fiancé wants his brother to do it but he has crippling anxiety. How weird would you find it if you went to a wedding with only one toast and none from the couple’s friends? I know this is my wedding and I can do whatever, but I just curious if you would notice.

I might not have any at my wedding. As a guest, I find them awkward.

Thanks so much, everyone. I love the idea of having my BIL give a toast at our rehearsal. It will be about 15 people, most of whom are his family, so that would be perfect. I think we’ll go this route!

like

i will not have any at my actual wedding minus my dad. i’m doing them all at the rehearsal dinner. nobody actually wants to listen to them at the wedding so it feels like a waste of time to me

like

As the MOH who gave a toast, I can honestly say it ruined my wedding experience. I love the bride to death but I HATE public speaking in general. I couldn’t concentrate or enjoy any wedding festivity, couldn’t even drink, until my toast was done.

like

I had a similar experience when I gave a toast at a friends wedding. It ruined the whole day. I know my friends would toast me if I asked them because they love me, but the idea of making them as nervous as I felt that day… I don’t want to do that to someone. I just want them to enjoy the wedding. I’m not worried about my dad, he’s been wanting to give the toast at my wedding since I was born 😂

funny

I’m doing the same thing — no toasts at the reception. I received some push back (honestly/ironically from my in-laws) but to the other commenters’ point, I find reception toasts to be awkward. People either (i) overshare or (ii) undershare/dilute the meaning of the toast because they’re trying to cater to a broader, less intimate audience

I’m doing toasts at the rehearsal dinner. Nothing at the wedding reception

Don’t think this is a bad thing at all. If you are having a rehearsal can always add speeches there for the smaller group and then have more time for other stuff at the reception. Speeches can definitely be hit or miss to begin with so if you don’t have a wedding party than I think it makes a lot of sense to not have anyone else speak.

I don’t think that’s weird at all. No one really cares about toasts. Also, could your BIL do his toast at the rehearsal dinner so it’s a smaller crowd?

No toasts at my wedding, just dad saying a prayer for the food as we are religious, and giving a toast beforehand

I didn't want to have any (we had three). I wouldn't care, in fact I think fewer are generally better. People don't think about these things as much as the person planning does.

I have pretty bad anxiety to the point where it affects my job performance and will cause me to waste hours because I'm trying to cope with symptoms. I hate that xanax works so well and am terrified of getting addicted to it. Wasted 2 hours this morning panicking and thinking I was about to have a heart attack or something stupid, then I took a xanax and drank some tea and I'm super focused again and my productivity is way up. Anyone else take xanax? I usually only do like 2x a week.

Help- my SIL showed me two dresses she rented for my shower, and I think they are super bridal/not very appropriate to wear as a guest or bridesmaid. I have asked others and they agree. So my fiancé and I are having a microwedding in Rocky Mountain National Park next year, and we’re working with an elopement planner.
She sent over a sample ceremony (intro, sweet poems + passages to be read, and example vows), and we read through it last night. My partner and I are planning to elope. We want the wedding and the trip that will go with it to be for us. That being said, we want to throw a party of some kind to celebrate with our friends. We're pretty lost as far as the general etiquette around this goes. Do you have to tell venues it's for a "wedding" reception? Is it expected that we will still make a gift registry?

We’re having an Indian wedding on a Sunday with ceremony in the morning, followed by lunch, and then cocktail hour + reception.

Given that the wedding starts early, we will have guests (~30) flying in the day before. What is the expectation in terms of arranging dinner for them? We’re trying to avoid having an additional event Saturday night - any idea on if these guests would need to have food arranged for them by us and what that could look like on a cost effective budget.

My stepmom threw me a very elaborate bridal shower. My stepsister pitched in and also did a lot of work for it. Bridesmaids helped but didn’t do a ton. What, if anything should I do for my stepmom and stepsister as a showing of gratitude? I don’t want to spend a lot of $$ but definitely want to act quickly and thoughtfully.

So, we have a wedding registry and my fiance and I would really like people to stick to gifting us what's on that registry. Yet, people keep asking what they should get us. The thought of dealing with a ton of crap we don't want or need is stressing me out. How can I politely tell people to only buy what's on the registry?

Are you paying for bridesmaid hair and make-up? Was a little sticker shocked $200 per person before gratuity, just adds up quickly with that many people😬 Not requiring it but wanted to offer it if they want to be more glammed up, but now seeing online that’s it’s considered quite rude to not cover it for them? Maybe just cover one and they can do the other if they want? Don’t want to be rude if it’s expected but also don’t want to blow our budget… any perspective on the “norm” appreciated!
