I’m never a fan of a company that will match an offer. If you can match it why haven’t I already been making that money? I’ve seen it happen many times and when the people decide to stay they don’t stay for long.
I understand where the company is coming from when they match your other offer - they’re working with the current numbers they have and their projected budget for the year. That’s why you need to do your research on your market value ahead of your performance review and present your findings along with strong supporting evidence of why you deserve more than what they’re offering.
That said, I also agree that too many times companies hold out on rewarding their star employees to save a few thousand dollars a year, when in fact it’ll cost them more to go through another interview and hiring process if that employee gets a competing offer elsewhere and decides to leave.
It comes down to:
1) first consider where you are in your career - are you at a point in your life where you can take big risks or do you need stability?
2) the grass isn’t always greener on the other side - I know I can get more at another firm for a lateral position, but do I want to gamble my current company culture and leadership/management? If the salary range isn’t shockingly higher with the competition, then is it really worth it?
3) if you are curious about another industry focus and you feel you’ve maxed out in your learning (static position) at your current company, then maybe it is time to take that leap of faith. You won’t know until you try. But if this isn’t your ultimate goal, are you wasting your time in an industry focus that won’t help you long-term?
Excuse the long winded response, but you make your own path so why not do a pros and cons list and weigh your decision with that?
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond my question. I agree on every single point.
I have been working as a Technical Assistant in Personal Lines in my current company and because I recently got the RIBO license I got this promotion to work as a Jr CSR in Commercial. Both jobs opportunities would be totally new to me.
The VP of my company wants to meet me in person today as she doesn’t want to let me go.
It seems that the other brokerage is more generous with employees’ salaries, however it is more narrowed. I’m leaning towards the new job offer in the entertainment industry but I’m afraid of making this decision and wasting a great opportunity to learn and get experience in Commercial.
Thank you for your response and your time! Appreciate that.
