I recently had a company ask for references before making a final hiring decision, which surprised me. Is this becoming more common? How do others feel about providing references before knowing whether they’re the leading candidate?

How should I go about preparing for it? Is MBA the only course?

What do you wish were different about your firm?

I am looking for a new job at the end of a long career. I have excellent experience in IP and Supply Chain Management. I've been fortunate to be in a high-paying position in the Los Angeles area and I rarely see comparable positions posted. The comparable positions at my company are filled by one of the big executive search firms. Any recommendations for finding the rare executive-level legal positions or for landing on the radar of the big executive search firms would be much appreciated!

Any thoughts on the IP litigation outlook in Atlanta and/or Charlotte? Looking to move but I’m not sure of the workload there. I predominately focus on patent infringement at my current firm.

For a writing sample: Is it better to use a motion that you won, or a motion that may reflect better writing/analysis, but that you lost? Does your answer change if the winning motion is more recent than the losing one?

In discussions to make a lateral move. Is there any way I can negotiate higher pay outside the fixed bands? Higher annual bonus, signing bonus? I assume chances are low but worth trying.

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? I have an offer for $130k for a senior attorney position in a boutique L&E firm. Also have a recruiter who thinks she can get me into another for $150-170k. Both are more than I’ve ever made (Denver, 17 yrs of experience but completely different practice areas). Any tips for countering the $130k offer for more using the other potential offer while not risking a complete withdrawal of the current offer? I’ve never been in a position to bargain my starting salary so this is all very new to me.
