You have an MBA and decided to go and become an underwriting assistant?
Probably only apply for jobs that recommend an MBA as a requirement.
43k is too low even with a bachelor's degree.
If it were me, I’d apply to underwriter developmental program.
The term analyst is too broad to provide useful suggestions. Do you mean
1. Investment analyst: Balance sheet investments, corporate development, etc.
2. Financial analyst: FP&A, BI, etc.
3. Business partnering: Personal, Commercial, Specialty, Life insurance, etc.
4. Data science analyst
How long have you been an Assistant? Are there any current UW positions available at your company? Have you discussed with your manager about the potential to move into actual UW role?
It'll be easier to move within your current company. You could either discuss becoming an Underwriter Associate or an Underwriter Analyst, depending on what's available and how open you think they might be to advancing you to an analyst position at this point. If you switch to another company that doesn't know you and your work as well, it's possible you would start as an Underwriter and then eventually promote to Analyst. Either way, though, you're going to make more money.
You are easily pivot into a business analyst position. That’s what I did (but without the MBA lol).
Search for business analyst-insurance positions in linked in. I’m sure there are entry level positions that you could apply for.
Start networking in the budgeting/finance departments and see if you can pivot to an entry level role there
My MBA was just completed this past May, and I have only been in the position for two years. I would absolutely like working as an analyst in the technology or medical fields. I just need some direction on where to begin. Do you have any professional advice?
Sounds like a pivot from the insurance industry to the tech or med industry (correct me if I've got it wrong). Great advice on LinkedIn profiles and understanding typical paths of existing analysts. Other suggestions:
1. Look up the 'qualifications' section of the job postings you would like to be selected for. Conduct research and get knowledgeable with those skills
2. Hit up every relevant alumnus, past and present, from your MBA program who holds such positions or hires for them. Build long term relationships
3. Check if you can work with an UW or book that has exposure to these industries. Understand any insurance related aspects of those industries so that you can 'bridge your path'
4. Create job alerts with key search words and go beyond the typical top 5 employers in your target sectors
5. Be current on topics of interest and news just in case you get an interview call
Happy to elaborate further if needed. All the best!
Why not continue in the path of underwriting? Couple years and you can be earning 3x+
