Good luck if you are thinking the grass is greener because you will find, same s*it different name
Never worked there but have worked under a holding company. If you are upper level you will miss independence. My experience: Hold CO’s are far less flexible financially. Your whole org is about hitting a number. If you don’t the consequences are all business. Personal relationships and nuance won’t matter… degrees of difference, but it’s noticeable.
^^ agree. Edelman 4 captures it well. It may not be felt as much at the AD level though. Promos and raises may be hard. It will take time to catch on to new processes (finance).
Lots of Edelman alumni going to Burson. Map to them.
A private fly held company gives no indication of how they are really doing, it’s just money for the family. A publicly held company needs to give more information to its shareholders and employees. And a heads up.
Lastly, you be you and do your thing. Look for great leaders and follow their step. Look for a Sponsir that has had your work experience and do them a solid— it will pay in dividends later on.
Congrats. You entering a co in reinvention mode with $$.
The entire leadership team hails from Edelman, so the transition shouldn’t be too dramatic—think less “culture shock” and more “déjà vu.” That said, brace yourself for a tech setup that feels like it was designed by committee (and not a good one), legacy agency folks engaging in Olympic-level worth-proving, and a workplace culture that might occasionally dabble in the fine art of toxicity. Fun times ahead!
Antiseptic soulless amateur stagnation
There are a few folks that tried Burtlson and returned, ask for advice. Always remember what works for one night now work for another.
I've worked at BCW and Edelman, my only agency roles
They are ofc very different but don't fear it. You get fantastic on-the-job training at Edelman and the work is top notch. You'll probably enjoy a change of scenery and good to get experience of a holding company, house of brands v a family-owned business that really pushes the boundaries. Good luck!
You will do great! Edelman prepares you for anything. Not at Burson but in a similar new agency situation. I have found it’s important to be adaptive / flexible and not come across as too obsessed with “how we did things at Edelman” - be open to what you can learn from new styles and environments while also bringing what you have to teach and offer. Don’t be pigeonholed as just another Edelman expat. Make an effort to connect with Burson old timers and non Edelman peers and mentors. Etc. You will be great. Congratulations!!!
Go in with an open mind and a positive attitude. Beware of soliciting other’s opinions. Their experiences don’t really matter and I think it’s wise to draw your own conclusions, especially when comments are negative. If you decide at the outset that regardless of relative ups and downs that you’re going to make your experience positive and successful, you stand a much better chance of achieving those things. Congratulations on your new role. Go slay!!
It really depends on which office you are going to. I had worked for 3 different Burson markets and the experiences couldn’t be more different
