I suspect a student in my class is dealing with food insecurity. Talking to parents feels invasive... but it breaks my heart. Anyone have experience navigating this?

Our school has a Kids Kare Kloset that regularly packs backpacks with items like fruit cups, granola bars, microwave pasta and soups, and other items that can be easily accessed by young kids. Our Student Service Team will quietly place these backpacks into kids lockers. Usually they will talk with the students prior to this to let them know there’s support for them…families wishing to contribute can do so as often as they want to.

Speak to your admin and counselor for support. They may be able to get information or community resources for the student and their family.

We refer students to our in-house social worker, our JAG teacher, and/or our YSC (Youth Service Center) for assistance. I also keep snacks like granola bars in my class, but even that’s awkward because they usually won’t ask.

like

I would always keep extra snacks and food available for anyone so that they wouldn't feel singled out. That combined with resources from the district to ensure they are not going hungry over breaks and summer. I worked with 1st graders, so it was easier to ask them questions than middle schoolers.

We have the “Angel” program through our guidance office. Teachers and parents can donate money. It is commonly used to buy students lunches and gift cards to local supermarkets for groceries. If a teacher sees a student who they think is experiencing food insecurity, a gift card is sent home, in an envelope so the student doesn’t even know that we’ve provided it to their family. The only thing in the envelope is a signature to send back with the student that the parent received our correspondence. We also purchase turkeys at Thanksgiving if a parent calls guidance and requests one.

Our counseling department handles this. (I am at the high school this year.) There are many students that get a backpack of food to take home over the weekend. In Michigan our students get free breakfast and lunches. A grant that I have no idea how we qualified for, pays for most of this. So ask your administration, maybe there are services available that you aren’t aware of.

We have a food pantry at our school. Our school partnered with Catholic Charities, and once a month we have a food bank so families can pull up in the front of the school and get food for their families. Students who are in AEP/ISS help distribute the food. Our PE classes also help pack the bags and distribute as well.

We recently sleep trained our 7 month son. He went from waking up multiple times during night and taking only 30 minute naps 3 times during day (most cases nursed to sleep or rocked to sleep or took a drive) to sleeping 12 hours at night without interruption and two 2 hour naps and one 45 minutes nap during day. We both love that he is getting enough sleep and well rested on one hand. On the other hand, we are now wondering if he is sleeping way too much.. contd…

my sister died this morning. I posted about her in a past post. Alcohol addiction, liver failure and then it taxed the kidneys too much, she went into cardiac arrest at 9 am and they could not save her. She was 51. Sad day for sure. Feels odd that she is no longer here. I just wish she could have had a better future.

Poll on general attitudes towards open relationships? I’m in one and find that some folks are totally non-judgmental about it, while others are so vicious/rude about it. Curious about your opinions! I understand that every open relationship is different, and each couple defines their own arrangement/rules. For context, ours is a passive one that’s hardly acted on, but we both have Grindr and meet guys for fun on the very odd occasion (whether together or apart). If you’re in one, describe yours!

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”
