I swear I heard someone go “Dude, are you drunk right now?”. I looked around immediately to see who it could be, but saw no one talking. I almost felt like I was getting pranked, that's how still the rest of the office was. Also, it was soft but not soft enough that no one but me heard it. Very unsettling.... Anyway, have you ever gone to work intoxicated? I couldn't even bother trying. It'd be hard to miss the fact that I am indeed wasted at work.

Today I asked if there were any policies that specifically stated I couldn’t drink while working from home - it’s been a long day - no one could find one so… maybe tomorrow is the day!

I've been to work, still tripping from an edible I took on a Sunday afternoon, but never did that again because the guilt was too much to walk around with. I prefer being sober and focused at work.

I can relate to that. I actually went to a basketball practice in high school under the influence. Never did it again.

Back in the late 90s, I was a network engineer. I got paged out for an outage. I was at a happy hour, so I got a ride back to the office and fixed the outage half lit.

Hahaha that's funny. Maybe you were getting pranked.

That's a dangerous prank. Colleague of mine who was new to a location in the company asked someone, "Are you drunk or something?" as a joke. Turns out the person was recovering and everyone but she knew it. She got written up.

Maybe they were talking to their computer. There are definitely days when I think mine's out of its right mind!

Oooh, yeah, I definitely showed up to formation still drunk one morning. I think the SGTs were trying to be mad about it but they couldn’t stop laughing.

As for civilian jobs? Newspaper? Yes. Most companies though - no. Any gov’t position absolutely not - my last county position they fired two different people for showing up tanked after liquid lunches.

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

I accepted a new job, they said PTO was “generous.” I find out it’s 19 days a year of PTO (which includes sick days). I have two young children and we like to vacation 1-2x a year (no more than a few days away each time). Am I crazy that this is pretty limited time off? 8 of the normal holidays off during the year (working the week between Christmas and NYE). Thoughts? I dont know if lack of PTO is a good reason to back out, is it?

If yes, how much one can expect in variable pay for fixed compensation of around 25-30lpa.
