Soft layoffs at ProServe today ?
I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Sounds like you need to find another job outside of PA if you can't escalate an issue, fearing that it will cause others more work, and think it will result in you getting fired. And, if it makes you feel any better I failed every part of the CPA exam once, BEC twice. Just calm down. There are many worse things in PA that will actually potentially cause you to get fired. Bringing up an issue timely is not one of them.
Not a big deal. Environments are super complex and people “need to do more research” and look deeper into things every single day.
I think the paranoia around catching an issue and asking a question (which doing the right thing) is more concerning
I don’t follow why you would get fired? Can you explain more? If you discovered fraud of some kind or some kind of internal issue and you’re afraid of reprisal, contact your firm’s ethics hotline ASAP. Seniors being mad at you shouldn’t result in you getting fired. You need to escalate the issue to the partner on the engagement or ethics if you’re legitimately concerned.
You won’t get fired for finding something that needs to be addressed/escalated. That’s the whole point of your job. You’ll get fired if you’re a bad employee. 1st years have the lowest expectations in terms of work level and quality. You should only get fired if you literally don’t do anything or if you manufacture something in your work papers that aren’t true and lie about it
If anything, it sounds like your senior dropped the ball. They should have done their own due diligence to verify it was actually a potential issue before escalating to anyone else/the client.
Also, I’d much rather be notified of something that turned into a non-issue, as opposed to me finding a bunch of real issues during review.
Nobody should ever be “pointing fingers” at the lowest person on the totem pole.. That’s just bad management.
If we all got hammered for false alarms, we all would've been fired as A1s.
You can do anything you set your mind to.
This is cute. Associate caring so much. I vaguely remember the days.
You don’t need to tell anyone you failed an exam as a staff 1. Just tell when you pass. Also you’re a staff 1 and expected to make a mistake. Just learn and be more cautious.
No one should be pointing fingers to the brand new staff. Oversight of what you are doing is the responsibility of the seniors managers and partners. All staff and all partners make mistakes. They happen at all levels. The thing that makes people differentiate themselves from one another is how they recover from a mistake
I definitely agree you should escalate but sometimes things that appear like issues resolve themselves after further investigation so there may be an explanation so I would not jump to the conclusion that it is not able to be worked through with your team and client
Any senior or manager who blames a staff 1 for basically anything is an awful person who doesn’t want to recognize they’re running a pooraudit
Although I’m in Tax - I genuinely wished as a new staff I focused more on learning Nd understanding my job instead of fearing of doing the wrong thing. As a new staff you’re going to make a lot of errors but you should focus on understanding Nd learning
Agree with all of the above. If simple mistakes got us fired as first year staff I wouldn't have been brought back after my internship
If they’re blaming you it means they obviously realized they messed up and should’ve looked more closely before going to the client
If there is a bunch of research being done that just adds to the fact that it’s likely complex and it’s not something you should linger on for not identifying. Why are you having to talk to the audit partner about not passing audit? Why do they give AF?
Go home. Have a beer. Talk to your senior or manager tomorrow, it’s going to be fine. First years are meant to learn. It probably wasn’t really your fault anyway, since you should have been well supervised, but own it. You’ll be fine. No reason to think you aren’t “cut out for this”.
It’s totally ok. If I was your MIC, I’ll smoke staff 2/senior 1’s ass, not yours.
They didn’t provide you with clarification, which was part of their job. What’s worse, they were supposed to unwind the situation. While you, a Staff 1, are expected to make mistakes even though of course I’d love it if you don’t make mistake at all.
Are you afraid of retaliation? Escalate the issue to the MIC/PIC.
OP, I honestly raised so many false alarms during my first year because I was overly skeptical. I got praised for it during my career outlook because a lot of first years won’t be ballsy enough to be truly skeptical of clients.
Start applying elsewhere
People make mistakes and as staff you are learning but it sounds like there are more questions to be asked and the sooner you start that process the better. I would start trying to get the answers you need to figure out if you have an issue or not. If you aren’t comfortable asking the questions (which is totally fair as a new staff) then ask your senior to come with you
These things happen to everyone :) don’t beat yourself up!
