It is lousy. However, agencies push their employees to this approach. They could simply promote and take care of their talent instead of waiting until they are threatening to leave. It is so much harder to train and replace good people.
I disagree. raises are controlled from the top, especially at the holding companies. and sometimes it takes a counter to get the $$.
in my case, I did this and stayed 6 more years (with a promotion in the middle) because it really was just about the money.
but NEVER play that game if you aren’t prepared to leave.
Everyone who lays eyes on this first post, for the love of god please pay no attention to it. Leveraging another offer is completely acceptable, no one gets offended by it, and no one will think you're an ass. Comparing offers is how you assess your demand, and leveraging/leaving is how you assert your worth. Your bosses don't take this as a sign you want to leave, they take it as a sign that you have financial common sense and personal ambition. I'm especially surprised to see such delusion in an advertising forum. We're literally in an industry with the purpose of making as much money as possible for ourselves and our clients...
I've done it. Worked out perfectly.
Yeah we should all just work for free. Our poor corporate overlords might not be able to afford that mother-of-pearl coke spoon set they had their eye on.
You really never want to be the fist option
Being the "fist” option sucks
What if your child is terminally ill and your family need the additional income, but you know you'd be happier at your old job??
Or you are expected to perform at your new salary level that they did not think you were really worth. No win. That’s why you should never do that
LOL of course not. It's the way it has been and will be forever and ever.
It can work. So can hitting on 19. In general, they're both terrible ideas.
I mean, if you have an offer making more money, just leave. That extra 5% ain't gonna change your life.
