IBM lays people off every quarter. Sometimes it is small, sometimes it is big. But there is always a layoff.
1) For AP’s and above the main metric is “Sales”. I know more than a few AP’s who have missed their sales targets for the year and kept their job, so it isn’t the only metric, but it is probably the biggest.
2) Skills. If you are in Cloud, you will probably be safer for the next couple of years. If you are an AP who sells UNIX development work, you probably won’t survive.
3) Travel. PreCOVID, While there were many people who don’t travel because they support local clients, but if you aren’t ready to travel every week, you are in the wrong business.
In my experience, their are formal metrics which you for sure want to hit. However the solid resources are known and their work is recognized. If you can’t self evaluate how you are doing in the scheme of adding value to the firm then you probably don’t belong as an AP. At a bare bones minimum you need to at least pay for yourself (through billing, sales, or account management)
