In accounting working over 40s is kind of expected and really a poor reason to give for a higher salary. I would have pivoted to your experience and what your bring as a reason you deserve 90 instead of 85.
Would that poor reason hurt me? As in, would they be turned off by that and rescind the offer?
I had to negotiate a job offer recently and I listed facts to why I want a higher number than the offered salary and that included research numbers, my experience, and inflation/living cost. Since they told you the salary range, that is a good fact to include in the negotiation too. Good luck!
The fact is, everyone expects they’re going to have to negotiate, so I’m sure it will be fine. At a minimum, they’ll probably come back and say no deal, do you want 85, and you’ll have to decide. Nobody wants to re-start the recruiting process.
But I agree with above, that it should be about your experience. Everyone is working 45+ hours minimum
