Your counselor sounds like a chode, ignore her. I'm also from a non-target school and know what it's like to hustle for any recruiter's attention. Proud of you
If she was trying cut you down and diminish your accomplishments, then it’s not acceptable.
If she was trying to shoot you straight and let you know that a straight white male wouldn’t have gotten the same opportunities, in an effort to highlight the firm’s diversity initiatives, that’s another story.
Here’s another angle to this. My husband was talking about how lucky he was to get to get big law and blamed it on diversity. He got it through a diversity hire event. I am only diverse as a woman and not ethnically. I think he was trying to make me feel better bc I didn’t get it. But man. I hope he feels a bit more like he belongs now, sounds like he doesn’t.
Don’t let it get to you. Even if you were a diversity hire, who the f cares lol. You got to where you got and you’re doing great things with it. And you’re wise enough to understand it was a ridiculous statement.
I’d let this one go and move on. Add a little distance to your relationship as well, this isn’t a good person for you.
Your counselor sounds ignorant and uninformed. At the campus level, being a women doesn't differentiate you, the BIG 4 have no issues recruiting women on campus.... Retention at more senior levels is the struggle. So yeah, they just liked you for you :) you can check the data in all the big 4 transparency reports. Gender is just about equal at the associate and staff levels.
Ethic diversity is another story.
I was highly offended when i inadvertently heard I was a priority diverse hire. this was 2 years ago. I had a call with my r/l on this whom apologized. I dont know. i find it offensive to hear something like that becuase you will always question yourself why are you here. Early promoted and T1 ratings and of course the only non white on my team of 24.
I just want to say whoever put the laughing emoji on your post is a doofus. I agree with you and that is not appropriate for someone to say that to you. Plus being tier 1 is very tough.
My professor (who had solid connections) referred me to the big four. I still get a “ you’re so lucky” or “ that was nice of them”
It’s like wow thanks haha
I echo other comments
Distance yourself not just from this gal but anyone who doesn’t bring you upb
Like your therapist counselor said this to you?
Well, your work counselor sounds like a dick
So minorities are underrepresented in b4 if that was why ppl were getting in they wouldn’t be presenting at lower rates than in wider society
Don’t you want to know the truth or at least other opinions?
I’d hate to find out people were dishonest with me in casual conversations just not to hurt my feelings…more than knowing I was a diversity hire
That’s a micro aggression and completely disgusting thing for them to say about you. I would have a major issue if I overheard a co-worker saying this to a black co-worker on my team (I’m white). You’re not making a big deal at all to be offended by this. That was a trashy thing to say and keep in mind- they aren’t seeing a picture of you when they look at the resume. Even if being in a certain group might get yours pulled for review- that doesn’t mean you’re not capable or smart for your offers esp when you went to a non-target school. I would mention what the work counselor said to you to HR. The reason being, if they are that blatantly racist to your face- this person can’t be trusted and has issues. Just wow. Hope you’re doing ok but that was a messed up thing to hear.
