No one can answer this generically and accurately…each company has their own compensation strategy and approach. It’s most common for the “NYC area” to be treated as one geo, but there is no hard and fast rule that says it has to be. A company could choose to compensate differently city to city within the same state if they wanted or found it to be strategically appropriate but it’s atypical due to the cost of administering comp structures at that micro of a level.
What an absurd question.
They usually pay by your office not your home location
No

No difference anywhere within the tri-state area

Hi from a fellow Hoboken-er! I've never had this come up (i.e., I believe my salary is tagged to the NYC Deloitte office, I was never specifically asked about where I was living). I will say it makes taxes only slightly more complicated (bc you pay both NY and NJ and have to subtract one from the other) but to someone else's point literally thousands of us do this and TurboTax has guided me through it for the past few years pretty seamlessly. Hoboken is great (esp if you WFH often!)
Thank you this is helpful! When you WFH do you put your location as NJ? And do they then not charge you city tax?

Generally, if you report out of the nyc office then you would be paid an nyc salary. Doesn’t matter where you live or how far you commute.
