What is the process for negotiating a job offer (from a firm or otherwise)? Do you have to be ready to ask for more salary/bonus/other perks right when they call you to make the offer, or can you ask for time to consider and then call back with your additional requests? I’m not the best at thinking quickly on the spot, so feel like I could be more thoughtful if I took a day or two to consider my requests.

I’m in discussions to become the GC of a mid size but international company that does ~$1 billion in annual revenue. Smallish legal department. They’ve asked for my comp expectations. Hi guys, I got an offer from x and i discussed that with my current. At 1st current said they can only give 30% increment. I said I can't stay with this cause i got 70% and expect at least 50%(as the 70% included VP and the current org don't have vp, they have bonus). Then they said they can do max 45%. I really wanted to stay here so I said okay to current. Then now hr called me and said they are matching the offer(no vp). What should I make out of it? What made them change their mind?

I can see short term changes but the way Amex has been aggressively marketing Platinum card, we just will have overcrowding of primary card holders 🤷🏻‍♂️
