If one wants to buy a house in the next 1-2 years, is there a point in investing in pension (above the employer match)? The tax savings by doing so are quite attractive though one would not have liquid cash till retirement.

+1 on this question. It sounds impossible to withdraw from pensions to buy a house right? So one should most likely be investing through a different véhicule until one buys the house?

like

If you are looking to buy a house in 1-2 years, even investing in stocks is not recommended. You need quick access to your cash so better to keep them in a bank savings account.

funny

This is so wrong - grow your money if you can whilst you save. Stock market is more than liquid enough to get your money out on the 1-2 month timescale between offer and exchange

I’ve been considering this. Reduce my pension to save for deposit, then increase again once I had steady mortgage repayments to make

So torn right now too. The match is really good though, but I can’t touch it for 30 years and who knows what’s going to happen between now and then 🤷‍♂️

Contributing for the employer match, you should absolutely do (thankfully QB’s contribution is non-contributory).

This is about contributing more than the match.

There was a news article not so long back in the FT I think about the goverment letting one tap into pension pots to pay a mortgage deposit. At the face of it, that'll be a substantial stimulus for the UK property market (if it needs one) and will make our lives much much easier haha

Hello Everyone - Looking for advice from Deloitte practitioners! I am a specialist senior at Deloitte, got back from maternity leave in April 2020. I had my offering leader schedule a call with me to notify that I have been rated a low performer because I had 46% utilization and mediocre firm contribution scatterplot. My project scatterplots have been consistently good 5,5(top right) over the last 3 years. Do they not consider these things before rating someone as low? Feeling very low!

We started back in August in distance learning mode, core subjects only. So no STEM classes. One of our 8th grade teachers was out on maternity leave, so I was asked to take that spot for the first semester. I was a long time 5th grade teacher, so not a difficult adjustment, except for learning new to me digital curriculum.

I have 2 STEM classes for the second quarter. Still online, so my focus is on coding.

Wondering what other STEM teachers are doing online?

401k loan for first house. Taking $20k to go towards down payment and closing costs. Option 1 is a “personal loan” with up to 72 month payback. Option 2 is “home loan” up to 30 years. With the monthly payments, I lean towards Option 1. Any cons to this other than it impacting my DTI when they see these debt payments on bank statements for mortgage pre-approval? I plan on having the loan sit in savings to “season” for a few months. Does this make sense? I appreciate insight! ☺️

I received an offer for a big gaming company! I was interviewing for an admin position where the pay was flexible. Well the recruiter said they wanted to create a position for me doing the same thing but more data entry. However, the pay was a little bit lower & there’s was NO FLEXIBILITY!! Taking this would mean I would take a 5k Paycut. I know it’s not a lot, But the drive is further. Benefits are great w/bonuses. I’m not sure if I should accept? I know I can get a higher pay elsewhere.

CHANGE JOBS AFTER 6 MONTHS? Advice needed
I work as a technical recruiter at a good pre-IPO tech company and got an offer Uber for a recruiter role. Not sure if it’s a good idea to make a move…

Pros
- Uber, good brand name. Better job prospects in the future?
- 15-20% base salary increase

Cons
- 6 month stint looks bad on CV
- Lose out on the equity I’d built for the last 6 months.
- no difference in benefits.
- not really a con but Uber role is hiring ops not SWE engineers

Roth or Trad 401K?
$210K in yearly household income + 10% bonus (just wife and I, both 32y.o.).
Take home pay is about $140K - includes 401K contributions and health benefits.

Can't decide if Roth makes sense as I don't anticipate our retirement income will exceed current spending levels. I get the appeal of tax free withdrawals but at the expense of paying more up front. Any advice?
