No. It depends on a lot of things, but mostly on how well they can negotiate.

No. And depending where you are, you may receive a certain % boost when you’re promoted, like 15%.
Agree with this! They would get % increases and the %could also vary. So they wouldn’t necessarily come to the same level at all
All of these answers from people who have not ever set anyones salary speculating on how it’s determined… here’s some insight from someone who actually does this:
1. It’s possible for two people to be promoted into the same level and get different salaries. Current salary, experience, performance, skills, retention priority all go into this.
2. It’s also possible for two people currently at different salaries to be promoted and get the same salary. This is something I will do if I want to rectify what I see as an undue pay disparity that existed before; especially if that pay gap is correlated with race/gender/etc. I’ll use the simultaneous promotion as a chance to level the playing field.
3. Negotiation skills almost always have fuck all to do with this! When you are first receiving a job offer you have a lot of negotiating power, but when you receive a promotion you have low negotiating power because you’re already doing the job (probably not going to quit the day they promote you) AND because your new salary has already gone through multiple levels of approval before you see it. Very, very occasionally I am able to go back and get someone a bigger raise than we initially gave them - but only really in cases where I can prove what we’re offering is way off what we’re paying comparable employees. Even in the best cases the additional increase will usually be pretty small. This scenario people are describing where you deploy your ~smooth negotiation skills~ to reject your salary and magically get a much higher one, is not something that happens unless you have a competitive counteroffer in hand (and even then, maybe not).
The best way to ensure you are offered the most competitive salary with a promotion is to be indispensable before you’re promoted… and to work at a company that’s consistently hitting its financial targets, which is honestly the biggest factor in any of this.
