If you are looking to make a move out of BigLaw, let me take a moment to plug public-interest litigation. I think a lot of attorneys don’t give serious consideration to making the move to public interest because they think that (1) they will be dooming themselves to poverty; (2) they won’t get to litigate sophisticated cases or get professional development opportunities equal to what they can get at a firm; and (3) they just generally don’t know what a public-interest practice entails.

By the way, (1) and (2) are false. And if you have questions about (3), feel free to reach out. As someone who made the leap to public interest over twenty years ago, I’m glad to answer your questions.

I’m a corporate attorney on the board of directors of a non-profit that provides healthcare and social services to at risk populations. No need to take a massive pay cut to do good. It’s possible to have the best of both worlds.

I got lucky. A partner at my firm knew the organization needed an attorney in my specialty for their board and they connected me with them and it worked out.

Nope, I don’t make a BigLaw salary and I’m not sure why you think that (unless you think that getting anything less than a BigLaw salary equals being in poverty.) I could have made far more money in BigLaw, but I wanted to litigate constitutional law cases and have a better work-life balance. I got to do both.

likesmart

That’s great! If I may, how much do you make?

like

So you are making big law money in public interest. How?!

Is it possible to make this pivot from a very specialized transactional practice? Also, do you have time to do anything on the side to supplement the income? (I’m in HCOL city)

Additional Posts in Law Exit Opportunities

What exit opportunities exist for international arbitration? I don’t want to litigate, and am a non-American so government jobs (which seem to be what my colleagues are exiting into) aren’t an option for me. I don’t ever see myself making partner (nor do I want to), and I feel totally stuck.

I have been overworked and overwhelmed at my current job for quite a while. This is my first position out of law school, small firm with large caseload, and in my second year of practice. I often think I should look for another opportunity elsewhere but I don't know that any other firms would give me the potential for growth and experience that I am getting here. What are other 2nd year associates doing at other firms? Trying to gauge if I really am getting more opportunities here

Has anyone made the transition from non-profit and small firm practice to federal government, big law, in-house? I’m a special education parent attorney at a small firm and I’ve spent my legal career in the education and juvenile areas of the law working for 2 non-profits before ending up at the firm. However, I’m just exhausted, unmotivated, and and looking for a change. At this point (6.5 yrs of practice), is that type of transition even possible or am I stuck due to the practice area?

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless

One of my junior associates recently resigned and I've been trying to make an exit myself for several months now. The job market has been really competitive but I am getting closer to getting a new job and moving on. The firm culture isn't great and work-life balance is non existent. My physical and mental health have been suffering, so I really don't think I could stay. How did you avoid the guilt trips from Partners/Senior staff trying to get you to stay?
