First, I know we all worry about the future in times like these and are afraid of losing our jobs. However, you can also drive yourself to the ground by worrying too much as honestly, there is only so much you will be able to influence. Therefore, ask yourself, ok, if I lose my job tomorrow, what do I need to do to be able to survive the experience. What can I be doing now that will help me better prepare? How can I divert my energy into something positive than something that will burden me with worry?
Second, nothing in life is permanent. At some point in your life, you would have very likely left your current employer for a different opportunity elsewhere. Therefore, if the current chapter closes, well it was going to close anyway. You can always choose how your next chapter should begin.
Third, when you look back at this moment, what do you want your future self to say about your current self? That in the moment of adversity, did you rise up and take your life by the helm? This moment could well be the greatest moment of your career as uncertainty can either cloud our view or it can help us further refine our vision.
Fourth, no matter what happens, you will get through it just fine. Think about all the times in your past where you were knocked down or suffered a loss. You lived through those moments. You will live through this one too.
I wish you the best. Your journey is in your hands.
Thanks, OP - we need leaders like you!
Me not worried about losing my job:
Partner: don’t worry about what happens next, there will be blood in the street but it’s not in your control
Me: 😨
As I am currently employed from a lay-off . This post really inspires me. Thank you so much. This truly means a lot to me. You are awesome OP. Thank you so much.
This is so true. I actually feel like those who experience lay offs sooner than later are less anxious about this and more resilient. Mid 20s and went through 3 re-orgs in my early 20s so they had to lay people off including me. Back to back, felt like I couldn’t catch a break. Used to work at a startup, agency, and the other was a popular tech company. Was devastating then, but led me to my current role which I’m so grateful for. My experiences also taught me to bounce back quickly and never take these lay offs personally.
That’s awesome and an inspirational story. Thank you for sharing.
Burning out and looking forward to the lay-off.
Thanks for sharing this perspective, OP! I’m going to pin this post and use it for motivation at times when I feel low! ☺️
Yes, please feel free to DM me.
I appreciate your words of wisdom but also concerned that they came from a PPMD at Deloitte, so I am assuming the layoffs are about to start happening here soon.
Don’t worry, I’m not at Deloitte. I do have a number of friends at Deloitte and I spoke to one recently who has ten open roles he needs to staff for. I hope that eases your concerns as I believe Deloitte is well positioned to navigate this current situation.
