I think PM would be a better exit. If you want to do both, it would be better to do consulting —> PM in tech —> early stage start up —> Principal at VC.
A former PM is more valuable at a VC than a former VC at a PM imho.
This! Usually operations helps you get into VC for the long-run. Unless you’re fine just being an associate for a few years and doing something else.
Having worked in VC without much ops experience, I frankly didn’t bring much to the table. Being able to advise and empathize with the people you’re vetting and investing in is hugely valuable, and that isn’t really possible without deep operational experience, and ideally ownership. It’s not like consulting where the advice is very analysis-based.
That’s helpful, thanks. Would you recommend PM first then? I’m thinking VC would be great long term but it sounds like PM/Ops would be a better place to start
