If you have a micromanager how do you explain or justify unproductive days to your boss? My boss has a hyperfocus on my hours (My chargable hours are way behind for the year but I also have a tendency to blow the budget in whatever area I'm working on). I know this is frustrating for her to deal with but I also feel as if even on my best days I'm not doing enough and I don't know how to explain any inefficiencies without it sounding like I am just lazy.

Can you focus on where you ARE efficient? Create a map of your week, forwards and backwards (unique wins/skills applied, versus down time, in an average M-F layout), and see if there are any learnings for you. Are you not giving yourself enough credit? Are you underselling your hyperfocus time and its results? Is there a format that would allow you to present the overall narrative instead of focusing on defending down time?

Ex: I get some of my best work ideas while doing the dishes. I'm not going to tell my boss I'm doing the dishes, but I'm also not going to count that as downtime.

For budget blowing, if you had regular checkpoints, would that help? Such as, "we budgeted X hours for you for this project", or, "we're going to meet about your time for 10mins every Friday." Some transparency and small doses of accountability could help.

Based on your comments about your performance at the start, it kind of makes sense to me why your manager is closely monitoring you. But I think you could directly explain how this kind of oversight is counter productive because it increases your stress. I think there's a way to have that conversation and come to some arrangement about how often they can check in on you like that in the future)

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.

I'm a cashier. We just got a new manager, and she's making things really hard for us. She starts work at 4:30am and leaves around 2:30pm, but she still expects us to stay until 6pm and work on the weekends! She gives us really long shifts and doesn't give us much time for breaks. And when we ask her about it, she gets mad.

I'm worried that if I speak up, she'll make my life even harder. I don't want to lose my job because of this—do you guys have any advice?

My boss won’t stop sexually harassing me. Verbally, email, texts - 400+. He even set up his office with a display of sex toys and edibles condiments to show me that he planned to give me oral sex. All started 3 weeks into the job. I moved my family cross country for this job and just bought a house. He promises me none of his requests or my responses will affect my job and is just begging now to be friends with me. Tell me what would you do if you were me.

What is the advice on what feedback to leave for a peer who really sucks at everything y'all have worked together on? It's about the time where everyone on my team requests feedback from each other and I'm nervous for it coming up. My manager knows that everything I've worked w her on I end up doing 90% of the work when it's meant to be split so it is a known issue. We're both at level 3 so are genuinely peers. She seems like a nice person but i have 0 positive work feedback tbh
