What market? I think this would be helpful
Is the 5% dependent on whether it’s in litigation/prelitigation? How many cases are you bringing in on average?
In theory 250 flat without commission isn’t greedy and is more or less on par with the 200+commission comp, but if I were you, I’d take the 200+commission over a higher flat salary; especially if the firm is high volume.
I also don’t see how your firm is going to jump from 160 to 250 in one pay raise. Have they given you any indication that’s the range they’re considering?
To answer the questions:
Northeast PI firm, very high volume. Recently switched from defense side. I brought in an avg of 15 originations per year, but moving up in numbers. Unpredictable of course.
No real indication of big base salary jump. However, my role has changed. Trials and trial results came my way, fees on trial settlements and verdicts alone cover 250 k base. My thought was 200 base plus 3-5 percent settlement commission would get me to 250 k if I settled 3 mm which is easily achievable. I'm sure I'll get pushback. Just having trepidation whether to ask for closer to 225k. Figured someone would be in a similar boat relating to comp.
I don’t get firms that don’t want to provide commission incentive for settling cases, I was at $75k making $155k on 10% commission after I made 5x my base salary in fees 4 years out in RI, so I dont see this as an unreasonable ask for 8 years out if you’re in Boston/NYC, if Providence/CT might be high, but depends on value, Id be a millionaire in RI if I was settling what I am in WA
From what you’re saying, your work product is making the firm enough money to pay you the 250k, so it’s not greedy to ask them to pay you the value you’re bringing them. Ask for the 250 and worst case scenario, you can meet them in the ballpark of 250.
