I’m a history major and have a hard time understanding when people talk about finance or accounting.

Any books that you guys can recommend that might help?

Honestly, account for dummies makes it very clear. Cheap and easy. Enough to be dangerous

Anyone can pick up the fundamentals of both pretty easily. It’s all relatively straightforward and simple math.

If you like text books, pick a top school, find the syllabus for their intro to accounting / finance courses, and see what book they use. Then go to Amazon and buy that book but a few editions back for like $3. There are also many free, or cheap, resources to learn online. Check edX or something

Get a foundational knowledge. Then see where you stand when these conversations are happening and what type of appetite you have to learn more

B school

CFA I will put you well ahead of most but will require some real time investment.

Level I before B School, Level II after. Apples and oranges, obviously, but CFA Level I covers much more pure finance/econ than all of B School; so I partied while the rest of my cohort struggled through accounting and corp finance 🍻

It may not make sense for OP. I’m pointing it out as an option.

like

You can definitely learn more and faster by yourself versus going to b-school. But instead of the book, there a number of providers that offer online finance of accounting courses. Some are even free.

WSJ

Sure, if you want to quote random market statistics. WSJ is very watered down IMO and lacks substance.

Just watch a bunch of YouTube videos along with. Netflix

Would like to hear your opinion:

I am new recruiter with about 2 yrs experience within people practice ( learning & development - Employability support - and now recruiting)

I am keen to transition to FAANG/UK but not sure if I should continue in people’s business! Or should I try RPM/APM opportunities as I am currently leading full cycle work with cross functional teams I feel that might be nice thing to take a look at.

Is there other promising career paths I can transition to within tech?

I have an MHA and 4 years of management experience. I’m currently a manager, but seeking a director level position. Any advice for trying to temper my expectations? Am I jumping the gun? Do I just need to stick it out?

How concerned are you about inflation? We have 70% savings rate and 50% of our expenses are housing / utilities of which the largest part is rent which is a fixed contract (no CPI escalation, no automatic increases, paying same rent for 4 years). No car as we are living in a large city. So if I look at the components of CPI and what’s rising I am feeling pretty „good“ about it. The one thing I am „worried“ is asset inflation but obviously that benefits me directly. What am I missing?

I hesitate to just throw out current salary + 20% bc I’d be asking for almost $190k for a SC role and I know that would be quite a huge ask for a SC @ B4, even for tech
