I’m a UX designer seeking my first job. I’ve worked on projects, networked extensively, and even taught others. However, the current job market poses significant challenges, prompting me to question my career choice. The financial burden has become so great that I can no longer afford to maintain my portfolio. I’m contemplating a career change or even returning to school. Could you kindly offer some advice on how to navigate these challenging times?

Which offer should I accept? Currently staff 2 at big 4 in Tax with CPA license. I want to leave tax ASAP. Both are public companies +1B in revenue and same salary. Offer 1 - staff revenue accountant so reading contracts, speaking with the sales team and legal team, a lot of work at the end of the months to close books and reconcile transactions to make sure we are ASC 606 compliant. This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.

Anyone have advice on getting your foot in the door at Google or Meta for a Sales Role? I’ve only got 3.5 years of experience but have achieved Presidents Club and have had success at 2 “blue chip” organizations.

I’m four months into my job and I got put onto a PIP. I worked so hard to break into IB, put up all the hours and even working 2am nights for weeks, learned a ton, and improved a lot along the way as the sole analyst yet this happens. I’m extra worried because it doesn’t seem there’s IB analyst positions out there. Im really hoping come January more positions come up but I’m just praying they don’t fire me until then. Is it normal for a Product Owner to lay out specs for how a feature should work?

I thought that was my job as the ux designer to figure out the best way to solve a need. But I’m getting handed projects where the PO, and sometimes the senior designer has laid out exactly what should happen (components used, flow, etc) to design a feature. It’s really frustrating because I don’t know if I’m supposed to be speaking up on what I think or just do the UI work I’m asked to.

Hey guys! I'm working on pivoting into ux research (background in product management and an MSc in marketing). Any recommendations for ux research certifications? Something that is well respected and well known and also provides a solid foundation of ux?

For other Senior Managers, Directors and above, how do you stay on top managing your team, and also your understanding of your users? I rely on my team through the projects they work on, and the insights they arrive at through the research/design process. I rely on listening to sales calls now and then. I'm curious what other tactics you have to stay informed?

I joined a project that had already started and the team already settled on creating a user journey map, even though none of them are designers or in ux. I also have no experience in this field as I'm a data engineer. The user journey map was for mapping out the process for tenants finding housing assistance, so not a technical product. Given this new field and type of work, I've been having a really tough time. Anyone mind sharing what helped get you through your first ux project?

This is pretty niche, but I have an emergency management background and am interested in transitioning to UX. However, I would love to find a way to combine my experience in disasters with UX research. Does anyone know of any tech companies that have an emergency management focus that would need a researcher for their products?

Trying to get out of consulting. Ux is so watered down and I’m terrified that it’s going to stunt my growth. I’m overall just not happy. Sure, consulting pats decently but I love the field of UX and just get stuck making wireframes that the customer requests. The field is so competitive right now and I can’t seem to land another job. UX Designers - how long did it take for you to find a junior role when starting out in UX?

After a long interview process, I had to decline an offer from Amazon. I was really excited, but they wanted to start me as an L4. I already have offers on the table $15,000 more then the possible top compensation an L4 can get.

Makes me sad. Has anyone else been real excited about a possible job and have been low balled?

I think I may have finally had it.

A couple of decades in this field and now I want to just walk away. The grind in tech is soul-destroying, and the vast majority of the time, coworkers outside of UX have no idea what it is, what it’s for, and how it’s applied. I’m at my wits end and the constant problem is a kind of “willful misunderstanding” of our process and value.

After wasting too many years on design immature companies, It’s senselessly depressing. I’ve given away too much of myself.

How important was your portfolio to land your first UXR job? There are mixed messages out there...

My product owner doesn’t understand the value of standard practices like information architecture, use personas, and just want to get to wireframes as soon as possible. Even after a few of us demonstrating that value and the founder chiming in to agree with us. How have you all combatted this before?
