I echo what A2 said - I just started at my new firm when the lockdown started and I managed to avoid layoffs by literally asking anyone I could think of for work. I definitely felt like a pest but most of my own files either didn't come with me or don't have much work that can be done on them. Specifically, I made sure to ask one person per day for work (never the same person more than once a week).
Do you have a good relationship with your principal? If you haven't already it is worth talking to your principal and trying to get him or her to help you find something to do, especially in light of your feedback. At least where I live principals are motivated to help their students get hired back.
Sounds like you're taking all the right steps. Good luck!
Be a pest and keep asking for work - I can appreciate that it might be awkward but it’s the only way to get more billable work and improve based on their feedback. Make them know you’re available. See if there’s a file that interests you and you want to do some research on etc. Docket contemporaneously to make sure you’re not missing any emails/phone calls. Don’t reduce your time. Keep them apprised of the non-billable work you’re doing.
Yeah I probably just needed to hear that again, I find it stressful to reach out via email but I guess it’s the only option at the moment! I’ve definitely been keeping an (often obsessive) eye on emails so there is that. And reducing time has always been an issue for me but I guess that’s the same for essentially everyone. Thanks so much, I appreciate it! I always feel like I don’t know what I’m doing but in the wfh environment it just seems more difficult.
Figure out which attorneys have cases with active discovery and ask them what they need. Specifically ask if there are any unique issues that you can help them research. May be worth even looking through your firm’s files to identify any potential issues to research (aka potential billable assignments) before you speak with any attorneys.
Thanks! I think I need to get better at the asking specifically for things that they need. And I hadn’t thought about looking through files, so I might try that out - appreciate the advice!
