For you to get your severance, you will be asked to sign a waiver where you give up the option to sue. I would not sign that before speaking with a lawyer. Instead, you can seek a settlement that pays you out for a couple of years.
Lol. Sorry didn’t read. Basically arrived at the same conclusion
Be grateful. They just paid for your retirement and new Telsa.
Get that reason in writing and then take it to your city or county’s human rights division. Even in at-will employment states (which most states in America are), discrimination against race, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, etc... is prohibited. They absolutely cannot fire you for being gay – they could, however, fire you because they decided they no longer like people with blue shoes or something as random as that, so they’re really dumb AF for telling you their real reason.
Name the agency.
I feel like there's missing information here. If not, definitely consult a lawyer because that sounds like they're itching for a lawsuit.
Because of the way things are structured, I’m technically employed by a religious nonprofit organization in Arizona (megachurch).
Not only is AZ a right-to-work state, religious nonprofit organizations are able to let someone go based on belief, or “lifestyle.”
Uhhh that’s a lawsuit
The agency is a subsidiary of a religious organization. The place is in a right-to-work state. While a lawsuit sounds great, at this point, I’m not comfortable filing against them for my own reasons. I am documenting everything and have evidence. I just want to move forward (for my kid’s sake) and once I have stability, I’ll visit that option.
It doesn’t have to be a lawsuit. The human rights division of your city or county will make sure you receive your full salary, etc... until you find new employment somewhere else. If you’re worried about your kid, having a stable income and the backing of the law is critical – much more important than just moving forward in an insecure job market.
After you get this in writing, I hope you share what agency this is so no one else has to experience this bigotry. I’m so sorry you’ve had to.
Please message me directly, as I would love to help you how I can. I work for a WPP company and would be more than happy to recommend you for creative director roles. I’m so sorry this atrocious level of discrimination is happening to you. This agency should be ashamed (and should be out of business for treating people like this).
DM’ing you right now
They said what using their outside voice? In 2021, in California
Sounds like further down OP says s/he work for a church based in AZ, soooo yeah, that’s going to be a tough one
Glad you’re taking all the right steps to get everything properly documented in case you need it down the road.
I’m so sorry you’re going through this.
Fairly certain that if you employ someone in California, you are subject to California labor/employment laws. Don’t let anyone tell you a suit is hopeless because of how backward labor laws are in AZ without at least talking to a lawyer.
Lawyer up.
😳😳😳
Lawsuit
Lawyer up to 10x your severance offer
