You shouldn’t have to.
Unfortunately, depending on where you’re interviewing, it may very well impact your chances. Up to you if you want to interview as your authentic self or what will optimize your likelihood
Do you have a job? Is this job a game changer? Probably not.
If they won’t accept you because of your hair, they don’t deserve you and can go extinct like all dinosaurs.
I think the bigger question is, do you want to work in an environment where you feel like you’d need to do that to be taken seriously?
Really good thought lol you're right
I'd like to give one final update. I got the job. They were thrilled with my interviews.
Depends on the startup’s culture, not all are the same. If it looks taken care of I think it should be fine. If they don’t take you because of your hair, you probably didn’t want to go there anyways.
Can you put your hair in a ponytail?
🤣🤣🍿👩🏽💻
Bro. Cut your hair. It will grow back. It all depends on if you really WANT the job. It sucks but its the world we live in. Things are changing slowly but they havent changed that much. Look out for your pockets. Do what you have to do to get in. Then decide what you want to do after you are inside. At least ensure its groomed to the T.
First thing to understand would be why you let it grow. Maybe I’m unaware of the implications of leaving your hair long just like a non-black person but otherwise, if you don’t want to why should you cut it? As long as you can make yourself look professional an interview shouldn’t be a deterrent to letting it grow to the point where you want it.
I’ve let myself grow a little more than usual since the pandemic but I’m not cutting it due to laziness. And yes, I cut it before important meetings or interviews but because my intention is not to have long hair and it also doesn’t look good to the point where I let it grow. What is your intention?
I don't think you should "cut" it but you should look nice and professional. With your look, could you go out to a nice dinner with your significant others' parents?
Or does it look like you rolled out of bed?
I think those standards can be applied to people of any race. Bed head vs. thoughtfully groomed.
I'm white and probably naive and don't get it. But if I was interviewing you and you had some gigantic voluminous hairstyle, it would be fine by me, as long as you seemed professional.
Have you been growing your hair out because you basically stopped taking care of yourself - covid depression? Or did you grow it out because you finally feel free to have the kind of hair you always wanted and were altering your look for the workplace against your inner wishes?
I've noticed several black colleagues and even some public figures who have grown their hair long this year and I would never ask about it but since it's been brought up, may as well explore it here.
Regardless of anything else, I always look presentable and polished when interviewing.
I'm white. I think as long as you look reasonably well-groomed and professional, you should be fine.
Wear a suit (at least in my industry) and groom/comb/pony tail or whatever. As long as you don’t like you just got out of bed you are fine and at my firm believe you would be looked at equally. I would question whether it’s a place worth working for in today’s day I age if it is a issue (granted I’m not naive- realize this actually is a question grounded in a reality that some may view differently).
Think about it the opposite way. Will you hire a white person into a consulting position with a mullet? Or think about any of the Vikings haircuts? Probably not... so it’s not a race thing it’s a business appropriate thing. Would you hire a Native American showing up to an interview dressed in a traditional Native American outfit? Or a guy showing up in a kilt? There is a space and a moment for it. Just stop trying to make everything about race. Yes, we have a race issue, yes we have to deal with it but don’t be silly about it. You are going to make bigger impact as an African American by getting hired and augmenting the number of African Americans in the workforce than trying to prove a point in an interview. Just use common sense when it comes to haircuts and clothing. Be profesional and that means dressing by what today we deem to be a business outfit.
Don’t cut it! Be yourself.
AA perspective
I have interviews coming up too. I’m cutting my hair because I just don’t want that self doubt.
Just be you (whether it means long or short hair).
The type of people who find issues with this kind of thing have larger issues in their own lives and will find something else to not give you a fair shot.
That’s their problem, not yours.
Just braid it down and you’ll be good
You do you!! 🙂
I'd get it braided up into clean box braids or I'd get a sew-in with leave out or a closure and get it flat ironed. It will stay straight for a a week or two with touchups. You can do the interview and then go back to your hair without needing to cut it.
With the box braids, wear them in a half-up or whole ponytail. Make sure your edges look clean and don't use hair that's unnatural colors.
I’d say play it safe and cut it. First impressions are everything and there will likely be unconscious bias against you immediately. Sad reality but if it’s a job you want that’s coveted, you gotta play their game
As long as it’s presentable. There are presentable afros and then not so presentable. Meaning clean it up, trim it and make it look good. If you roll out of bed and turn that camera on, don’t expect people to say well he/she is black. I’ve seen people at work with large Afros, and it’s always tidy. It looks good
Dang everyone else beat me to it. Glad it went well OP
Unclear on the posters gender...
If male, then just make sure it’s combed over and you don’t have too much facial hair
If female, I don’t want to mansplain...but I’ve heard from other women that the fro look is viewed as unprofessional. I don’t think interviewers will be able to see how long your hair is otherwise. Just make sure it’s a professional style
