I don't have experience with government jobs, but I do have experience talking myself out of pursuing something I'm dreaming of because I feel underqualified. Give it a go!
Thank you, I needed that reminder. This has been my goal FOREVER, but I'm realizing that I continue to put it off and feel like I'm not qualified. I'm tired of putting it off, but I'm still afraid of trying and then finding out that I'm really not qualified because that feels like "not good enough," if I'm being totally honest...
I think this is totally doable with all of the experience you have! You might have more options than just the CDC though. If I were you I'd also look at the USDA, the FDA, and the NIH. All of these government orgs have need for veterinarians. And yeah, I think have 7 years of post-school experience will be a major help to you!
I would say there's no one size fits all or one path that everyone has to follow. My best friend did just get a government job and didn't have to get additional experience but perhaps it would help to get some to get some edge. She does say she could've negotiated more pay if she had more experience
It definitely takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get a job with the government, but it can be done. I actually got my job with the government straight out of vet school, but I did have additional experience and credentials that helped me stand out from other candidates. I'm sure with your amazing experience and credentials, you can do the same!
