I’m currently in contact with a third party recruiter, but an agency recruiter just reached out to me about a role. Should I inform both recruiters that I’m speaking with each of them? What’s the best way to handle this situation?

Nothing. Until you have an offer on the table or things start to get very serious, you say nothing. In this job market, prepare to be ghosted by one or both of them.

likehelpful

Yes. “They already reached out”

like

Inform the agency recruiter first and let them know about 3rd party recruiter. Ask them how to go forth. Don’t just ghost the 3rd party one because they might be of value to you down the road. If agency recruiter takes over the process, then be courteous and let 3rd party know. They won’t hold it against you.

like

I’ll definitely not ghost anyone here—I know I’m in a privileged position to be speaking with both. The third party recruiter gave me a list of agencies, and it just so happens that one of them is the agency the other recruiter is from.

I’m wondering if I should gently inform the third party recruiter that the agency recruiter has already reached out and ask how to proceed? Sooner or later both will find out anyway.

like

Prioritize agency recruiter and move forward with them. Tell the 3rd agency recruiter that agency recruiter reached out to you directly but that you would love to discuss other roles that they may have/ stay in touch for down the line.

Don’t ghost neither of them as someone else said. Transparency is always best.

like

No, You should pursue any opportunity you might want until you decide to accept one. If a recruiter asks if you're pursuing other roles, honestly say: Yes, I've been searching, but there's nothing solid yet.

Don't think for a second that they're not working the applicant pool the same way that you're working the job market. It's not dishonest - it's how you find a job. No one should put their eggs all in one basket. You're looking for a good fit (so are they) and that requires looking at multiple options.

The only time you should share details is if a recruiter asks to submit you to a client that a different recruiter has already submitted you to. You can simply say: I've already been submitted to that company, and leave it at that.

like

Has your third party recruiter submitted your info for this job? If not, then I wouldn’t worry until you have a written job offer. If they have, then that’s a whole different conversation and it would look like the hiring company is trying to avoid paying the recruiter’s fee.

Also, did you and the third party recruiter discuss positions you had independently applied to? That’s an important conversation to have.

like

I don’t think the third party has submitted my info to any agencies. We are at the very early stage of discussion.

As for the second question, no we did not. It was the agency recruiter that reached out few days later.

Third party recruiters get paid a fee by the agency to introduce candidates to them - if they submit you to someone who already knows you, they won’t get paid - worst case scenario you burn a bridge with third party and agency recruiter feels so awkward it takes you out of the running for the job.

That said, you don’t ever need to tell agency recruiters who else you’re talking to. Unless you have or are expecting an offer from someone else, then letting them know can help them move things along faster, put pressure on finance to approve things, etc.

So you want to be transparent with the third party recruiter, but if it’s a huge agency network with lots of recruiters, where it’s possible the third party is referring you to a different recruiter, role, office etc, wait to get a little more info first. Then you can tell third party hey fyi (name) from (agency) reached out to me about a job in (city). You don’t need to share more details than that

like

Be very careful of third party recruiters who rattle off a bunch of agency names. That's their way of saying they contacted you about these agencies, so if something were to move forward with one they mentioned, they will make sure they get their cut and give you a hard time if you use the in-house recruiter. Then the in-house recruiter will get mad at you for not disclosing that you spoke to an outside recruiter about that agency. Bottom line: don't let the 3rd party recruiters rattle off a bunch of names. Only talk to them if they have a specific job they're looking to fill.

smart

This is exactly what’s happening with the third party recruiter. We’ll be meeting up to talk about the different status of agencies in the city. Should I be firm and only inquire about those that are looking? I’m also worried I’m leaving opportunities on the table if I don’t.

Ghost the 3rd party

3rd party may not have real jobs at all the agencies they showed you. If they try to set you up with an interview just say you already are talking to them. Or don’t mention that agency when you respond.

3rd party recruiters often case a wide net so they can claim you later from their peers.

DONT SAY ANYTHING. Just continue to process with both of them until something lucrative comes up

I just don’t understand why we have the illusion of “choice” if the offer is the same and it is really bad (in our case).
Going from $61 per paycheck for 2.5k deductible 75% copay to $500+ per paycheck with 500 deductible 85% copay.
Other firms have better health insurance?
